    Packers release veteran center Winters

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers have cut 16-year veteran Frank Winters, but are expected to re-sign the center at a lower salary, according to newspaper and television reports.

Winters was released Monday, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette and WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee.

Winters would have made a base salary of $2 million this season. That salary and $473,000 remaining from a signing bonus in his 2002 contract would have counted against Green Bay's salary cap.

The Packers could re-sign Winters and pay him the $750,000 minimum for a player of his experience. Just $450,000 would count against the salary cap.

The 39-year-old has played the last 11 seasons in Green Bay.
