Offseason a time to remake players

Ed Jasper, the Falcons defensive tackle, arrived in Atlanta from the Philadelphia Eagles in the spring of 1999. He weighed a doughy 320 pounds.

Under the supervision of Falcons strength and conditioning coach Al Miller, Jasper began dropping pounds and adding muscle. Jasper's body changed so quickly, he says, that he bumped into walls when he turned corners because he wasn't used to his shoulders being so broad.

"It was funny," he said, "but I loved every minute of it."

Although perhaps not with the same color, some of Jasper's teammates can tell similar tales of dramatic conversions. It is in the NFL's offseason, in workout programs like the Falcons', that players are remaking themselves.
