    Hasselbeck setting follow-the-leader pace

KIRKLAND -- The last time Matt Hasselbeck was on the practice field for a Seahawks' passing camp, it was a more-miss-than-hit performance with too many of his throws sailing past the spots where his receivers were supposed to be.

It was early May, and that practice felt like quitting with a miss when shooting baskets.

Was it a sign that Hasselbeck is regressing, after his torrid finish to the 2002 season that including breaking the franchise record for passing yards twice in the final five games?

    Hardly.

"Matt was fine," offensive coordinator Gil Haskell said at the time. "He played fast today and everybody else played a little slow."

Hasselbeck has spent this off-season not only re-establishing himself as the starting quarterback but laying the foundation to become the leader of the offense -- a unit that averaged a league-best 475.8 yards over the final six games last season after Hasselbeck replaced an injured, and still mending, Trent Dilfer.
