Redskins on seventh coach in 10 years

ASHBURN, Va. (Jan. 4) -- Jim Zorn was fired by the Washington Redskins early Monday, the first step in yet another team overhaul under owner Dan Snyder.

Zorn was informed of his dismissal shortly after the team returned to Redskins Park following Sunday's season-ending 23-20 loss at San Diego.

Zorn went 12-20 over two seasons, but he lost 18 of his last 24 games after a 6-2 start in 2008. The Redskins struggled early despite a weak schedule this season and finished 4-12, their worst record since 1994.

"The status quo is not acceptable," general manager Bruce Allen said in a statement released by the team. "I felt it was necessary to not waste a moment of time to begin building this team into a winner."

Zorn's replacement will be Washington's seventh coach since Snyder bought the team in 1999. Playing a role in the decision will be Allen, who was hired as the GM last month.

I wish Buffalo would say that and mean it......

The "real world" status quo? Not the one Ralph blabbers about every 3 years or so right?

It didn't take the Skins long to get a new head coach. Mike Shanahan will take the team over for the next 5 years at $7 million a year! Snyder certainly has money to blow. I still don't think it's going to buy him a winning team or a winning season.

Too bad the Bills can't act this quickly and get a new head coach.

I hope Shanahan knows what he is doing. If he was really offered 10mil per season from Buffalo and took a deal that pays 3mil less per season, he must really think Washington is that much better than the Bills.

I don't think it's as straight up as that. I'd say the Skins are pretty comparable to the Bills at this moment in time, but they have a more sound history and they are in a big national market with lots of attention. I think those may have played into Shanahan's desire as well.

    Probably.

I wonder if he factored in the whole big national market aspect when he falls flat on his face...assuming he does so.

Doing something the opposite of how Dan Snyder and the Redskin organization does it can only be a good thing, IMO. Maybe they need to give it time.

WOW! I didn't realize the Bills out an offer out to him. I don't know, I agree with this statement.

The Skins have been through 7 coaches in 10 years. Frankly, I wouldn't want that kind of pressure on me. And to be honest, I don't think that Shanahan can turn this team around. I think their problems go much deeper than coaching. Sure, Buffalo isn't a high profile market, but thta could also be a good thing. He can get the team in shape and then when they start winning, he can have the media attention for winning. He's going to get a lot of media attention in Washington, but I bet most of it is going to be critical and he's going to be under the microscope and this market is not kind to the Skins coaches. Best of luck to him. I think he madae the wrong decision.

I'd rather have them take two weeks to get a coach and make the right decision rather than pick one in a day or two and have it backfire right away.

I look at it like buying a house. Do all your research before you make the final decision.

With that analogy, Shanahan looks great on the outside, but who knows what it will be in a few years.

I'm not positive the Bills ever even made an offer. It was just rumored that when they met with him, the Bills were willing to go as high at 10mil per season.

The Bills may have made an offer but 10mil per was just a media fabrication

Personally I don't think Shannahan is going to have the same degree of success that he had in Denver considering that he doesn't have an all star roster with John Elway and will be competing in the NFC East.
