  • Are we really moving to a 3-4 defence?

Firstly we resign Bob Saunders last season's DL coach who has previously worked almost exclusively with 4-3 lines and left the Packers because they moved to the 3-4

Secondly, Giff Smith has been recruited as a defensive assistant. No mention at all of the term outside linebacker coach.

Might it be that both Gailey and Nix have realised that there would be more of an upheval than initially thought in shifting to a 3-4 defence and that it seems that this defence is once again seemingly losing popularity with the overall success of 4-3 defensive teams getting to the SuperBowl.

It would not surprise me that the DC might be happy running either formation which I think would be the best outcome for the Bills.

That's actually a good question? Watch it be Bates when it's all said and done.

I agree with you that people are jumping to conclusions. And a message board poster saying Giff Smith is coaching our OLB's isn't exactly a reliable source.

However, that's not why Sanders left the Packers. Sanders was fired. IMO it was fairly unjust, as his defense had numerous injuries and thus performed poorly.

I think assumed rather than reported

Sanders and Giff's titles are very vague and leave room for interpretation about what their actual roles will be. Yesterday I was fairly convinced we were going to a 3-4. Today's announcement leaves me a little less convinced, but I still think it's likely.

I actually think we will wait until free agency and the draft occur before making a final decision.

I think Nix will want to draft players not simply because they fit a system but because they are the best available.

I don't think he would pass on a 4-3 LE simply to reach for someone because they are more suited to the 3-4

IMO i would say no. Why would you want to rebuild both sides of the ball. Especially after Buddy said he thought we are close to winning. It makes more sense to add one or two pieces to the defensive side of the ball and focus more on the offensive side where we have been atrocious.

I completely agree. Some of our young LBs like Harris and Palmer seem unsuited to the 3-4.

Our existing defence automatically becomes better with an improved offence as they have more rest time

Exactly, we would have no depth on the D side of the ball if we moved to a 34. I think they will add a LB to replace Ellison and then turn their focus to the O.

No, it was definitely reported today that the Bills are switching to the 3-4.

That's true about Sanders, he was fired as the DC. There was no way he would take a demotion.

Sanders served under Bates in Miami when Bates ran the 4-3 using Bowens and Gardner in the middle
