Lucci relives being part of 'Paper Lion'

George Plimpton is taking a mulligan on a planned visit to the Lions.

Plimpton hoped to attend the annual Detroit Lions Charities golf tournament at Indianwood Golf & Country Club on Monday. But he has a foot problem that would make it a chore to spend a day on the course -- even in a cart.

"I talked to George Thursday, and he had to cancel," said Tim Pendell, the Lions' director of community relations. "We're going to work on having him visit training camp, instead."

Actually, having Plimpton at training camp is fitting. Trading Paper Tiger in golf for Paper Lion in football is a winner for both.

Plimpton took part in the Lions' 1963 training camp at Cranbrook as part of his research for "Paper Lion," published in 1966. It was the story of a walk-on who tries to win a job as a quarterback in the NFL.
