Miami Dolphins DE Phillip Merling was arrested on Wednesday and charged with an alleged aggravated battery on a pregnant woman.

Merling, 6-5, 305 pounds, is a third-year player who has appeared in all 32 games for the Dolphins his first two seasons. He was arrested in Broward County, Fla, where the local sheriff's website reported that Merling should have known the alleged victim is pregnant.

If true, he is a shoe in for this years douche of the year award.

What a moron. When Starks moved from end to NT it appeared like Merling might finally get a shot to be a starting end for the team. This stupid move probably helps first round pick Odrick overtake him. I always figured Odrick would be the starter and this just helps his case.

Dolphins will likely let the process play out because you never want to act to quickly until you know everything. Look at the Starks arrest last year, it looked REAL bad right away but after a few months the truth came out and the whole thing was basically dropped. Not saying that will happen with Merling because it seems pretty cut and dry what happened, but don't expect him to get cut or anything anytime soon over this.

At approximately 1:26 a.m., Merling struck his girlfriend, Kristen Lennon, ``on or about her face and head against her will causing redness and swelling,'' according to the report. The victim is pregnant with the couple's second child, the report said.

The report also noted Lennon sustained a cut to her lip. No more details about the incident were provided. In Florida, aggravated battery is considered a second-degree felony.

It's not unreasonable to consider intent when judging the malice of the act. Along the continuum of athletes behaving badly, Merling sounds more nasty and malicious, while Lynch is more of a knuckleheaded dumbass.
