Preseason Comments:
7/16/2010- Luck is a red-shirt sophomore who will be draft eligible this year. The biggest things going for Luck are his poise and accuracy. Luck will put to much on on his intermediate to deep throws, and can look inaccurate down field. The 09 USC game is and example of this. Andrew boasted a 143.47 passers efficiency in 09 with over 2500 yards thrown. Luck had 13 TD's only 4 INT's and was sacked 6 times. Whats working against him is that he only has one year as a starter under his belt. Recently, it seems players have a better transition to the NFL if they have started all 4 years. Supporting cast may also be a factor. Marinelli has left for the NFL, as has Gerhart so some new faces will have to step up or he may have a tougher time rebuilding on his 09 campaign. Still, returning senior, Ryan Wahlen was the #1 WR target last year and racked up almost 1000 yards. Chris Owusu is a highly thought of prospect for next years draft at WR as well. Harbaugh has commented that the Cardinal offense will likely throw the ball more so it will be interesting to see how Luck fares. On the personal side, Andrews father, Oliver, played with Warren Moon and the Oilers. Having a NFL QB for a dad, and an NFL QB for a Head Coach would help anyone's learning curve for sure. He's got the smarts... Andrew was a valedictorian in high school so intelligence wont be a problem. Luck may not declare and may finish his degree the traditional way.
Comments:
9/5/2010- vs. Sacramento State
1st Qtr:
14:19- Throws with decent footwork, and dropped the pass right where it needed to be.
13:53- Nice patience when he waits for the receiver to get out of his cut.
12:22- Nice touch on this fade in the endzone. It was a bit long though.
6:56- Shows a bit of wiggle on this run. He pulled it down quick and took off.
6:18- Showcase play. Threw a tight spiral on the money for this long TD throw. Perfect accuracy on this play. It wasn't a rocket, but the touch was amazing.
4:17- He has a real smooth throwing motion. Its not the fastest release but its fast enough. He doesn't have the strongest arm but it's strong enough.
2nd Qtr:
14:54- Great poise waiting for the TE to get open in the seam. Fires it on the money to the TE.
14:22- Nice roll out and throw on the run. His accuracy is very good.
13:32- Nice job feeling the rush and running for the 1st down. Needs to do a better job of sliding and avoiding the hits.
12:18- Shows decent zip on this throw to the TE. A bit late getting the ball there.
11:19- So poised on this play, rolls out to the right and waits for the guy to get open and drills it to the TE in the endzone. Very calm and collected. The game seems easy for him.
11:15- Threw too high. His mechanics looked bad on this play.
10:45- Much better mechanics again, drilling the ball on the slant.
8:38- Nice fake hand off and drills it home. Great accuracy again.
4:11- Blindsided by an unblocked DB. Hit pretty hard but got right back up.
4:05- Stands right in there and makes the throw without showing any signs of losing pocket presence after the hit.
1:37- The throw was a bit high but was thrown with good velocity.
3rd Qtr:
10:52- Blindsided again by an unblocked DB. He knocked the ball loose as Luck went to throw it. Bad looking play but it was a scheme problem when these guys come unblocked. The hit came righyt about at the 3rd second after the snap. I don't think he holds on to the ball to long usually. He also tends to roll out if he gets pressure. I don't think he will take many sacks.
5:23- Ball tipped at the line.
* Came out of the game at this point.
In this game, Luck showed why he may be the #1 overall pick. He has great poise, pocket presence, makes great decisions, and has above average accuracy. The only question mark on him is his arm strength. It looks to be strong enough for the NFL IMO.
9/19/2010- vs. Wake Forest
2nd Qtr:
12:14- Nice short drop and pass over the middle.
11:12- 3 step drop and TD throw. Not really being tested in this game.
9:41- Has a quick release and throws with zip but the ball velocity isn't elite.
9:16- Went through progressions on this play and then checked down.
7:42- Called run. Ran for the long, 52 yard scramble. He can run with the ball but doesn't resort to it, is more likely to throw. He doesn't get happy feet.
5:09- Threw the ball well under 3 seconds after the snap. It didnt have great velocity but was on target.
4:45- Threw it away short when he had even a sniff of pressure. It will be interesting to see what he does under heavy pressure.
3rd Qtr:
11:37- Shows some patience, waiting for the TE to get open.
11:05- Nice touch on this TD pass.

More of the same from Luck. Smart, effecient, and doesnt make mistakes hardly at all. He's a field general who can control and run an offense. He doesnt have elite arm strength but he has nice touch and can get the ball everywhere it needs to be. In this tune up game, he continued to show franchise QB ability.
11/6/2010- vs. Arizona
1st Qtr:
8:10- Great poise staying in the pocket and waiting for the TE to get open.
7:53- Out lead blocking on this run.
7:30- Poor decision jumped in the air and threw the ball short. It was almost picked.
6:00- Moved up into the pocket and threw teh ball deep. Footwork was sloppy, never pointed his foot. Throw was long and off target.
1:07- A few of his throws have been a bit behind the receiver.
0:53- Throwing a lot to the tight ends.
0:21- Nice job shaking the tackle in the pocket.
2nd Qtr:
14:55- Pressured on both sides and drills it in between two defenders for a 3rd and 15 conversion.
1:18- He's doing what he does. He manages the game, keeps the chains moving, and finds the open guys.
Checking in on him. Still the same story, great poise, solid decision making, and very productive. He plays rock solid in most every game.
11/20/2010- vs. Cal
1st Qtr:
6:29- Under threw the long throw. That's my worry about him, how will he do with the long throws.
4:46- 58 yard run... unreal.
1/3/2011- vs. VT
1st Qtr:
14:47- Bootleg run for decent yards.
12:41- On the run, throws it into the ground short of the WR.
9:50- Decent short throw to the TE.
9:07- Went deep on the throw but went through progressions on 2 or 3 options before he threw it.
7:09- Looked middle then went to the RB outlet on the right.
6:42- Nice read, found the WR for the 1st down on the right sideline.
0:59- Worked hard to try to get the ball out in the endzone but it was deflected and caught in the endzone for a safety. Should have thrown it quicker.
2nd Qtr:
10:07- Great job checking down to the TE.
6:32- Classic Luck TD, waits for the guy to be in the perfect spot and puts it on the money for the TD. Fantastic poise.
4:32- Threw a pick. Not an inaccurate pass by that much, but still a miscue.
2:13- Nice roll out throw, thrown a bit low for the 1st down.
1:54- Nice pocket presence, waiting to drill it over the middle for the 1st down. It was dropped.
