    Preseason Comments:

7/18/2010- Transferred to Arkansas from Michigan in 08. He decided to leave when Rodriguez came in the door with a scheme that Ryan didnt think would be a good fit. He also considered the move going "home". Mallett grew up in Arkansas. Ryan has a very strong arm; possibly strongest out of the top 5 QB's. He can make all the throws. Mallett has pretty questionable footwork at this point and his low completion percentage shows it. Accuracy will be pointed to as his biggest problem but footwork is mostly to blame. His decision making is decent but he will make some bad plays at times. For a man his size he also has deceptive quickness and is by no means a statue. Last year he looked erratic and raw, if he can improve his footwork and polish, he could be special. His demeanor may come into question, he can come off as a bit of a punk. It will also be interesting to see his Wonderlic...

7/25/2010- Appears to be recovered from a broken foot this winter. The boot appears to be off. http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/po...m-expectations

    Comments:

    9/28/2010- vs. Bama

    1st Qtr:
14:52- Nice adjustment to the high snap, delivers a strike on the run
14:17- Showed you the progressions on this play finding a wide open man in the flat.
8:57- Called screen to the right. Hes very smooth in his delivery. Good poise.
6:06- Bad throw, off balance and rushed. Footwork was bad.
*5:24- Unblocked guy flying at him, reads the rush and delivers the ball to the guy in the flat on the left side. Great poise and pocket presence getting the 1st down on this play.
4:54- Doesn't point his toe at the receiver and throws a bit too far to the outside.
*4:15- Great pocket presence moving into the pocket, going through the progressions and finding the open guy short. Pocket had collapsed.
2:25- Fantastic ability to evade the sack but just heaves it up there and was almost picked. Needs to throw it away.
2:00- Puts too much on this 3rd down throw and throws it a bit behind.

    2nd Qtr:
13:11- Finds a wide open man and throws a very strong deep ball, nice spiral. Appears to have not been the first guy he looked at.
*12:51- Guy in his face, delivers an unbelievable throw deep downfield to the far side of the receiver where the DB cant get it. Then takes the hit right after he throws it.
11:40- Overthrows his TE in the endzone. He may need to work on his touch more. It seems he puts too much behind his throws at times.
11:34- Horrible decision, throws the ball into tight coverage and its picked.
*5:06- Puts his play making ability on display. On the run being chased delivers a strike on target to Childs who has a DB draped all over him.
0:39- Very good timing on this throw, waits until the opportune time to throw it for a decent gain.

    3rd Qtr:
*11:32- Great job avoiding the sack and delivering the ball on target to Williams over the middle. Footwork is sound.
10:28- Great touch on this throw. Tough player who can take the hit.

    4th Qtr:

6:22- Made a throw that was a bit short to Childs over the middle, was moving backward and off balance.
4:48- Threw the ball a bit too far and behind Childs, to the S for an INT. Didnt point his foot at the receiver. During the replay you can see that he goes through progressions quickly and then just heaves it up to Childs. He's a bit too risky to try to force plays.
3:07- Ball son the money, the receiver needs to make the catch.
*3:02- Bama is blitzing every down. With calm and poise, he delivers the intermediate strike over the middle under pressure.
*2:16- Under pressure, throws the ball on the money to a covered man for a decent pickup.
1:48- Dumb throw, just heaves it up there for the pick.

Ryan Mallett is a gifted play maker who can make all the throws in the world and has really progressed in his pocket presence and poise. He doesn't get rattled. What he does do, is force throws at times. He may be overconfident. Teams will need to coach him to eat it or throw it away. However, a team like the Bills who have suffered through guys that wont throw it deep may be willing to take the gamble on a guy who will play risky at times. It may be easier to coach a guy to eat it than it is to coach him to throw it. Mallett was able to go through progressions many times in this game. He shows he can read defenses. But again, he's risky and will just heave it up there at times too.

    1/4/2011 vs. Ohio St.

    1st Qtr:

14:54- Nice spiral and tons of zip on the deep route over the middle... a bit high though.
14:48- Nice job feeling the pressure and stepping up... another drop.
9:43- Nasty throw into the corner of the endzone where only the receiver can get it.

    2nd Qtr:

9:47- Sweet throw over the middle.
8:41- Great job recognizing the blitz and open guy because of it.
7:38- Great down the field zip on this throw, put it on the money and it was dropped.
4:33- Hung on to the ball too long. Got up and went at it with Heyward.
3:39- Is getting blitzed almost every down.
1:00- Nice poise evading the pressure and making the big 1st to Williams.
0:50- Bad throw to no one that could have been picked.
0:22- His frustration and throwing a fit with Heyward isn't helping his cause if your worried about his maturity and ability to lead.

    3rd Qtr:
11:31- Throw a bit off target and throw into coverage.
10:59- Nice job reading the outside pressure and drilling it to the open man.
9:59- Thrown a bit too far deep.
0:58- Another great throw on a fade route throw over the shoulder for a TD.

    4th Qtr:
4:50- Poor pocket presence on this play. Stepped up into the pocket, and almost threw a pick.
    4:43- Another huge dropped pass.
0:58- Throws a huge INT to lose the game on the 20 yard line.

Mallet showed a lot of moxey but struggled under pressure at times in this game. His numbers will look bad due to so many dropped passes. He seemed to lose his cool toward Heyward and it may further demonstrate some maturity issues.
