LITTLETON, Colo. -- Copies of Colorado Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy's jail badge were smuggled out by jail workers and one of the photo IDs ended up for sale on eBay, authorities said Friday.

Eight to 10 jail deputies face internal discipline and two civilians face felony charges, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said.

Roy was arrested in October 2000 on a charge of misdemeanor criminal mischief following an argument with his wife over in-laws. The charges were dismissed.

A brother of one of the deputies stole a replica of the ID badge from the deputy and gave it to a girlfriend, who offered it on the Internet auction site, Robinson said.

The sheriff said he was determined to win the bidding on eBay so the card would not be lost. The agency won the auction with an $805 bid, but through cooperation with eBay, deputies talked with the woman and retrieved the card without paying.

Through Friday afternoon, Robinson had recovered 12 other cards from deputies and former sheriff's office employees. He said none will face criminal charges.

The accused thief and his girlfriend face felony charges of fraud and possession of stolen property, Robinson said. They have not been arrested, and he declined to identify them. Both live in the Denver area.

The deputies involved could be disciplined.

Robinson said he planned to apologize to Roy in writing and in a phone call.

"I think it was a very small number of deputies who used very poor judgment," he said.
