Coaches with NFL ties help give league validity

Former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Barry Krauss vaguely remembers crossing paths with Mel Gray on the football field as players in the National Football League.

"We played back in the early '80s," Krauss said. "I think he was some kind of offensive guy I hated."

The two former NFL stars will meet on the field again Saturday -- this time as head coaches of minor league teams in the North American Football League.

Gray, who played wide receiver for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1971-82, will bring his Forest City (Rockford, Ill.) Gladiators to town to face Krauss' Indiana Tornados. Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Carmel Stadium.

The Tornados (1-0) opened the season Saturday with a 32-13 victory over the Lake County (Chicago) Chiefs. The Gladiators are 2-0.
