Record breaking season

so i keep seeing and hearing all the numbers that drew brees has broken.
and that there were 3 other qb's that were close to doing it also.

BUT... i havent heared anyone mention that this could COMPLETELY be becasue of the kickoff yardage rule change.

the fact that most of the time these QB's were starting from the 20 and not the 25, 30, 37, 45 or so on, means that most of the time on a hight potent passing attacking offense like the saints, brees has 80 yards to score everytime.

so that means he is most likely going to gain more yards on the season.
as will every other qb out there.

i just think its funny that nobody has mentioned this.

exactly. that would be a great stat to see. i think there are alot of records that are broken solely because of rule changes.

its just amazing that with all these analysts and espn being solely dedicated to sports news, NOBODY has brought it up.

Honestly, I don't think any of these passing records means crap anymore.

The NFL has watered down the NFL into an air-show thanks to their stupid rule changes.


Go back 10 years ago. There was something called "bump and run" coverage. Wide receivers actually had to have skills to get open. Since this "illegal contact" crap was created, most defenses are scared to even try man-to-man coverage. It's just ZONE, ZONE, ZONE.

Pass interference has changed too. There was a time when passes had to be realistically catchable for a ref to call pass interference. The defender had to grab jersey, grab an arm or shove the guy down with the ball in the air for a flag. Now they call it for ANY CONTACT WHATSOEVER.

So, when Marino set the record in 1984, teams were kicking off from the 35 yard line, just as they were this year. That's probably why nothing has been mentioend about it.

Kickers didn't have the legs then that they do now, though...just like all of the other athletes on the field they are getting bigger and stronger. Prior to '94, even kicking off from the 35, it wasn't unusual for a team to carry 2 kickers with one being a 'kick-off specialist'. Just to add a tad more, take a look at the number of FG's attempted and made from 50+ yards, now vs pre-'94.

It's why I took him as my fantasy QB in a non keeper league and would have won the damned thing if he had thrown one more TD or avoiding his 2 INTs in Week 16. In terms of Rodgers and Brady both had to play in the elements more than Brees but than again the winter season hasn't really hit the North East/Central region most games this season.

Well, to be fair, Peyton Manning plays 10 of his games every year in "Domes/Warm weather cities"... Nobody makes a big deal of it for Manning.

8 in Indy (Enclosed), 1 in Houston (Enclosed) and 1 in Jacksonville (Warm Weather). Next season, Indy has road games against New England, New York Jets, Chicago, Detroit and Kansas City. Of those, Detroit is enclosed as well.

That means, next season (if he plays, obviously) Manning could potentially play in 4 bad weather games MAX... 4/16 is 25%... Meaning he'd be playing 75% of his games in "Domes/Warm weather cities" as well.

Also keep in mind, if any of those four games (New England, New York Jets, Chicago and Kansas City) aren't played in "bad weather," that 75% would only go up.

Of the 31 NFL stadiums, 9 are enclosed, 3 more are in Florida and 3 more are in California. When half of the league is a Dome or in a warm weather location, if you play for a team that plays it's homes games in one, chances are, you're gonna play around 75% of your games in a climate-controlled environment.

"Completely" is a strong word that ignores other factors. I've mentioned the lockout and lack of ability for defenses to work together during the offseason as a factor before. It's possible that your factor is the case, but if it were to verify, there'd probably also be a greater number of punts this year, all other things even. I wonder what the statistic on that is.
