That's nonsense. Nations promote unity of language all the time. Modern Italy once had dozens of languages but has seen that number decline rapidly the past couple of centuries. Spain, once a bastion of little languages, now speaks almost universally Castilian (what we know today as Spanish), with the exception of a few pockets in the northern parts. Occitan, once the language of much of southern France, is almost extinct. Gaelic, once the language of choice in Ireland and Scotland, has been reduced to a novelty in favor of English. Those are just a few examples.
Jesus. Did you people use the blue linky in the initial post of this thread? Obviously, to some people, speaking a second language is considered a bad thing.
Hey, did you hear? The Judicial Committee is having a hearing next week on a bill to make English the official language of the US.

And, it has nothing to do with pragmatism and everything to do with ideology:
"A common language is the most powerful source of unifying force for any nation,” King said. “Over the course of history, common languages have created cohesive cultures and have helped prevent division.”

First, you are confusing learning a 2nd language with having a national language. They are two different things.
Second, you have no idea what the **** you're talking about in reference to Gaelic. I was in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland at the beginning of July. The governments go to great lengths to retain the Gaelic heritage, particularly in Ireland proper. EVERY SINGLE SIGN is in Gaelic and English. Granted, very few people speak Gaelic as their main language, but if you know your history, you would know that it's due to British oppression more than some desire to have "unity of language."
I don't know enough about Castillan or Occitan to comment (which is a distinct difference from you, as you seem to have no problem whatsoever with talking out of your ass).
All I can tell you, is that when my redneck cousins (all republicans obviously) post crap on facebook about "press 1 for English" it's done out of lack of understanding, and bigotry.
Most of the eastern Europeans I have worked with spoke English, German, Russian, and a little Polish.
We cherry pick students for Spanish and French classes, because most of our students can't even write in English, much less a second language.
Spanish should be a mandatory class in all levels (K-12) of schooling, due to the changing demographics of this country.
THAT is what scares the **** out of the republicans.
I took eight years of French, and luckilly Spanish is kind of similar, so I can squeek by with my Hispanic employees.
I WISH I had taken Latin, back in 1976.
This issue has NOTHING to do with the amount of money spent on ESL classes, to think it does is disingenuous.
I said you need to strive to better than everyone else. I didn't say you needed to be better than everyone else. But you gotta try. That's what character is. It's in the try.
Americans have culture? News to me. Aside from the NY Philharmonic and the Albright-Knox art gallery I can't think of much. Of course we do have the NFl....and MacDonalds.
