    Awesome.

I'm generally not a fan of cats but Mr. Chips was purchased by my wife and follows me everywhere. He is the most loving, playful pet one could imagine. 4 year old sphinx with a thin coat of hair and bat ears. The purr motor never shuts off and it loves people. Hard to dislike.

I find a lot of people who say they don't like cats just haven't been exposed to the right cats. Some cats are just nasty, and others are too timid and hide all the time. But if you get one that's friendly and likes attention, they are a lot of fun.

So far, Mamie seems to be one of those. She hid under the bed for the first hour or two that we had her, but slowly started coming out to see us before retreating back under the bed. We decided to go to the basement and watch TV to give her some space, and periodically we'd come up to check on her. After about an hour of this, she followed us to the basement. She's still a little jumpy and will run if someone moves too quickly or if she hears a new sound that she isn't used to, but she is basically following us around everywhere. She isn't hiding and always wants to be pet.

Dammit, I went out for a minute to get some coffee and now that I'm back, I can't find her. I looked all over our house (it's a 3 br duplex, so it's not even that big) and I can't find her anywhere.

My now-X and late grandfather-in-law caught a cat from his barn for me when I started talking about babies. And I am NOT a cat person. Feral cats are something else. I had to look for him every time I came home. He found some really good hiding places. Hated to be picked up so I'd just let him come to me. Very cool cat.

Sounds like you got a good one too. And she's very cute.

Re: Getting our new cat, Mamie, today

I actually found her in the closet under the basement steps. The house is old and the door doesn't close all the way, but I didn't think she had enough space to sneak in there.

I left her down there. She didn't sleep all night because she was exploring all the new territory, and I'm sure she sought that space out to sleep because she feels safe there. Once she gets more used to the house, I'll find a way to secure that door better.
