I am looking to get a wifi printer that allows ipad iphone airprinting... Curious to know if I can still connect direct from main computer and have wifi enabled for other devices or is wifi an all or nothing proposition???

So, assuming your computer has a usb port, the way I'm reading it, you can.You can access the printer 3 ways, via USB 2.0, Ethernet or through Wi-Fi, a fairly easy to set up wireless interface (802.11 B/G/N), which you can actually configure without having to cable up first.

The printer will end up being a part of your home network. You will be able to print to it from any network connected device, whether it be a wired or wifi.
Here's what I want. I have an iMac near Airport router. I want don't want my iMac wirelessly printing. If I connect the printer to the airport router via ethernet or USB I believe I need to select connectivity on the printer and it is an either or situation.
Alright let me back up a bit.
There are only two ways you can print anything. One, you can print to a device connected directly to your computer/device (USB or parallel), or two, you can print to a device on your network.
When a printer is referred to as "wireless", that just refers to how it connects to your home network. So functionally, a wireless printer acts the same as a printer that plugs into your router.
So in other words, there is really no such thing as "wireless printing". If your printer is on the network(wired or wireless), you can print to it from your iMac plugged into your router just as well as your ipad could over wifi.

Now, if you try to print from more than one device at the same time, you might have to wait for one or the other to finish, but there shouldn't be any button you have to push, switch, etc, in order to choose between a wired or wireless device.
I can say that I personally have never seen a printer that has wifi that you needed to "switch" in order to print wired. But again, to be sure, I'd ask who you plan to buy it from, or call Brother themselves.

So if I'm reading you right you have the printer plugged into your router. Set the printer up as wired (since that is how it is connected to the network), and you'll be able to print to it from any of your devices (regardless of how they are connected).
you don't even need to connect the printer to the router anymore. Most wi-fi printers have to be directly connected to a computer for setup, and you use their software to enter the information for the wi-fi network. Once that's done, the printer can be disconnected from the computer and the router because it will get all it's info wirelessly.
