I admit, I didn't take disaster preparation seriously. I should have listened instead of mocked you.

Luckily I did gas up the cars. Luckily I do have power.

But...

Now there are hours long lines at the gas pumps. Tensions are building up. Reports of looting. How long before rioting starts?

I'm actually serious. I'm going to become a doomsday prepper once this thing dies down a little. I have a list of things we need. At least I gassed up my cars before the storm. I don't have to wait 2+ hours for gas.

You gonna get it done before the NEXT storm? I'll bet there are a few people on the East Coast who wouldn't mind owning a wood-burning stove about now. They're not difficult to have installed. And there are plenty more who dodged this particular bullet but don't realize they already need to be preparing for upcoming events. (and wow, people were pretty unprepared for this one considering they had MANY DAYS of advance warning!) You can now see the usefulness of several weeks of food & water, ability to purify water, warm clothing, batteries, flashlights, hand-crank radios, wood-burning stove, something to cook on that isn't electric, tarps, cash, oil lamp. Some people in hard-hit areas are even finding the need for self-protection. (I don't personally advocate a firearm since that's not how I roll, but I can see why people might want one in a looting/survival situation)

As I've said before, it is very dangerous to live on the coasts. That goes for any of them, east coast, west coast, gulf coast. Time to think about getting out before global events physically remove you. This is really just the Preview Show of what civilization will look like when the electric goes off and gas is scarce. So start thinking about what you'd need to survive for a couple months that way.

I have lots of friends and family on Long Island and from the little I gather on FaceBook, it looks like things are still in really bad shape for them. A lot of them still don't have electricity or gas for their cars and apparently neither do the gas stations! My one frined waited over 2 hours to get gas and the station ran out before she was able to fill up. What a freaking mess! And I heard another storm is on its way.

The thing is you don't know who's overreacting and who's legitimately in need. No one likes a major inconvenience like not having power or having to sleep over someone else's place or taking in others. That doesn't compare that to having your entire house destroyed. It's hard to figure out who to really sympathize with and who to tell to calm down.

The nerd in me did a calculation. I have enough gas for 6 more days. I hope the lines die down before that!

I agree BF1, it's a matter of who is over reacting. In Cranford people have waited 3-4 hours in line at the gas station but a 10 minute drive south on the parkway and there are no lines. The smart people called around and avoided the lines while those in town posted on all the local sites about how terrible it was.

A lot of people are still without power in Jersey but no one is going hungry and no one will freeze to death because there are plenty of shelters, relatives, friends etc. Hopefully the rebuilding will be done smartly on the shore (I'm not optimistic) but eventually life will go on.

yeah I mean, it's stupid. They might have to rebuild when the next super storm comes in 120 years or so. They should just leave all that pristine waterfront to rot. Makes perfect sense.

I don't know why BGE bothered to reconnect my power after the derecho. After all, it's the first time it's ever happened, but it could maybe someday happen again, so what's the point in fixing anything?

Well Mayor Bloomberg claims this storm was caused by "Global Warming." So we should expect another one soon enough. Maybe even before the coast is rebuilt!
