    Bills Future looking bright

Looking at the team today bright is not the word you would use but looking ahead there is a lot to be encouraged by.

    Offensive Line:

LT - Glenn is looking like one of the best young LTs in the game right now, very strong and very mobile. Blocks well in line and is great at blocking in space and on the run. Is also an efficient pass protector.

LG - Levitre has quietly established himself as maybe the best LG in the AFC with Logan Mankins. Very quick and very strong in the run game and in pas pro. Great at leading in space.

C- Wood has had injuries but is now healthy and has justified his first round selection. Did a great job overall containing the best DT in football (Wilfork) in both the pass and run game.

RG - Urbik - Not quite as highly regarded as the rest but Urbik came to Buffalo as a waiver wire pickup and has become a more than reliable starter. In fact he could be among the top 5-10 guards in the AFC right now. His absence in the Bills lineup was definitely noticed.

RT- Pears/Hairston - Either one have been stout at RT. Both offer solid pass protection and hold their own in the run game.

OL overall - In my opinion this is the best OL unit in the NFL right now. The Saints line would have been with Nicks but with his move to the Bucs I think the Bills are #1. They are simply overlooked due to our record.

DL - We all know the characters - I think this DL is a work in progress and will slowly improve as a unit. A better scheme with better coaching may be the answer but more time together and being healthy is also key. Mario, Kyle, Dareus, Anderson and Merriman are all battling injuries right now that are forcing them to play at less than 100%. I think next year is the year they really show up.

Secondary - Young secondary and that is the biggest problem. Byrd is good but still learning to impact a game consistently. Gilmore is showing why he was a top ten selection but also showing his youth at times. Mckelvin is slowly getting confidence back in his game and Williams who has had a horrible year is out for a while which may do him some good. Mckelvin actually seemed to have a good game on Sunday as Brady found no deep plays open. Wilson and Searcy will be an interesting battle to watch the rest of the season.

Overall I think we are fine in the secondary and next year it can be a very strong unit.

LBs -- Easily the worst unit on the team. No playmakers, no fiery hitters, no one good in pass coverage. They are the main reason our DL rarely gets to the QB. Smart QBs continue to use RBs, backs and receivers on short routes that abuse our LBs. We need serious talent there which will completely reform our defense. What we need is a defensive QB as right now it just seems we have no identity.

Receivers -- This group is developing into a very strong unit of dynamic players, each brings something different to the table. Stevie obviously the main target, after that Jones has made a niche for himself as a reliable slot receiver that has the speed and quickness to separate inside. Chandler has become a threat to any defense over the middle, great hands and knows how to run routes and find spots in zones. These three form a solid core and if TJ Graham can develop into a solid #2 on the outside we will have all the required ingredients.

QB -- Fitz is the best we have right now, but if someone can come in and learn the Gailey system and add to it a stronger arm and more accuracy then we have a top 3 offense.

RB -- Any QB who steps into the huddle for the Bills will have the luxury of having these two RBs who will make life much easier, especially for a rookie QB. Trading Jackson is no longer an option as he is much more valuable to the Bills than he is to another org.

Bills Overall - Young team, loaded with talent in key areas, except at QB, for me that means that we are not far away. Any QB who steps in to this team will have plenty of advantages right away. We also need a QB on defense however, either at safety or at LB. Someone to take charge and make adjustments when needed.

The Bills really are not far away from being a contender in the playoffs let alone making the playoffs.

I like the o line and the running backs.

The rest of them you can keep.

We need a QB, it is only the most important player on the field. The league has 32 teams, and does not have 32 starting caliber Quarterbacks

The receivers are garbage after Stevie. Jones has made some plays, but would be 3rd or 4th receiver on most teams. McKelvin is a free agent after this season & won't be back. A mid level FA replacement CB would make a lot of sense.
I don't want any future QB learning Chan's system-Chan should be fired on New Year's eve. He should not be a Bill for even one second of 2013. The good news is it looks like Ralph is doing well, even working with a personal trainer & that means he can fire Nix & Gailey after the season & hire new guys.
So, all we need are a new GM, a new head coach & staff, 3 QBs, 2-3 WRs, 2-3 LBs, and possibly a new kicker. A really aggressive team could spend & get the job done in a year or 2.

Chan should stay. Enough restarting. We need to continue building this. Lets not forget we had no OL or DL before Chan got here.

That is a nice positive spin on things. That said, it is going to take a lot to fix the defense and the hole at QB is huge and difficult to fill. Hard to imagine the team being more than just a playoff after-thought without a fix at QB.

You've said this same thing for three years now. We are still WR, QB, OLB, MLB, CB, and a SS from where we need to be not to mention our lack of depth.

Exactly and over the last three years we have managed to add some critical pieces. You say WR but we only really need a #2 which is not hard to find. 4-3 LBs are not hard to find either. Especially in rounds 2 and 3 and 4 where there are typically a lot of good ones. CB and safety is more luxury than anything. We have Gilmore now and we have other young guys opposite him who are still learning. Williams still has a chance to be a player at either CB or S. Searcy is a guy that is getting more time and can challenge for a starting spot. So I don't agree that these are big needs but more things that we can just improve on.

The only really big need we have is QB and maybe MLB. MLB can be filled by Shepp as he is in his first full season as starter in a new defense. He probably isn't playing fast because he is reacting constantly instead of acting. Either way, we need to spend a high pick on a LB either inside or outside.

Bottom line, if our DL was playing at a high level this year we would be 6-3 rather than 3-6. As we have often scored enough to win games. This team isn't far and our needs can be addressed in one offseason.

                  You completely overrate our WR's.

Stevie is streaky and still makes mental mistakes (like not getting to the sticks on the first drive). None of our other WR's are above a #3. Even with a true #2, we're still dealing with Stevie's inconsistency and mental mistakes.

We also used to win 7 games a year & thought that wasn't good enough. With Chan you are now content with winning one of every 3 games and think we're headed in the right direction if Chan can get back to Jauron's unacceptable 7 wins this season. I guess any win total better than the 4 & 6 in his 1st two seasons would be an improvement. If you are what your record says you are, Dick Jauron was Vince Lombardi compared to Chan, since as you stated, he did it without an OL or DL.
This past Sunday the team had the 2nd most penalty yards in its history, and the most since joining the NFL. That's because the team is poorly coached. When your team is poorly coached, you don't keep the curent staff for continuity's sake, you fire them with the idea that we can do better.

I think we have some good young pieces to work with, but aren't really that close to being a contender.

We don't need to have great players at every position, but we do need a great player at every level of the defense. We have huge gaping holes at LB that need to be addressed. We could have a stellar secondary and DL, but without LBs, teams will continue to exploit us over the middle.

There's also that big gaping hole behind C.

It's the hardest thing to find in the NFL and until we find a franchise QB, we will never be contenders.

i know it makes no statistical sense, but i like the gailey teams alot better than the jauron team.s you saw the ceiling with jauron and knew he could do no better. the games were boring. they were just hanging on to survive.

true, we still get blown out and nothing is better, but each game, there is a sense that the team is capable of winning. it's just htat they buffalo it up.

i'm not saying he's the right man to fix all this because it's becoming clearer by the day he isn't. but the offense is much better and the line play is much better.

if we could have had gailey as an OC, jauron as a DC and a legit critical thinker as a Hc, they might have been playoff bound. jauron and gailey don't do well with the press and let it get to them.

                          continue building what?

This team has used it's first round draft pick on defensive players in 4 of the last 5 draft, plus a ****load of 2nd and 3rd round draft picks. Plus, we got the biggest defensive FA on the market in the off-season. Yet, the D still blows. And we STILL have no DL. On paper we do, but it doesn't show on the field. On O, we are solid at RB and on the OL but definitely need a QB and need help at WR.

We've been absolutely horrendous within the division.

The problem with Gailey isn't that he hasn't had enough time. It's that he's not good enough. You could appoint Gailey coach for life and we'd still be lucky to ever get above 9-7.

Of course, starting over won't help either because the Bills will just make another bad choice like they did with Gailey, Jauron, Mularkey and Williams.

The only thing Stevie has been inconsistent with is being thrown to. Stevie is fine. And he probably had to come back for that ball so I don't blame him for not getting to the sticks. Not every pass or every route is ideal. Sometimes you get to the sticks and easy first down, sometimes you have to come back and extra yard and use run after catch to get the rest.

You underrate our WRs, if anything Stevie is a better #1 than he appears. A stronger QB would have him over 100 receptions easily and 10 TDs.

As for Jones, young player that was injured a lot of last year, now he is starting to produce good numbers from the slot. Has good hands, strong and has good run after catch skills.
