    Why Alternative Energy

when we have nuclear power? We are pumping billions into alternative energy while nuclear energy will do the trick. Yes, I understand nobody wants to store the waste in their backyard and it can be unstable....see Japan. But we already have the technology and the money can be invested elsewhere.....no not the military

It's still based on fuel that needs to be dug from the ground. It would buy more time but what happens when Uranium runs out?

there was some momentum behind nuclear power, and even some of the old environmentalists jumped on board and recognized it as the least bad solution, but then the earthquake in Japan happened. Now, no one wants to touch it.

I think there are better alternatives to be found. Nuclear waste and possible disasters are kind of a big deal

ok, but as of now they are not found. So, either we embrace nuclear power as the least bad option, or we do nothing and hope that, maybe, an alternative eventually comes up....

We need the "next" oil...............a new energy source to power mankind for generations to come. Fossil fuels will be depleted soon. Not likely in my lifetime but we will certainly hit "peak oil" if we haven't already. Cannot wait until fossil fuels are gone to start researching....that is why we need to invest heavily now to find that next generation of energy supply but also invest in the infrastructure so mankind can use it.

Also, I read a review of a book (yes, really I did) but I cannot remember the name of the book that stated that the strength of a country is related to it's ability to harness new energy supplies. We became a true power after finding ways to use fossil fuels and we also unlocked the atom. If we take a back seat to the next generation of energy to say China, we will become a 2 bit country by the 22nd century

Nuclear isn't as dangerous, obviously, as some would like to make it out to be. Good temporary, short term "bridge' perhaps, but agree with others that brought up the points about resource depletion, 'cleaner' alternatives, and the simple economics.

Long you live and high you fly And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry And all you touch and all you see Is all your life will ever be.

If you had just a minute to breathe and they granted you one final wish would you ask for something like another chance?

I am ok with nuke but not ok with the current organizational structures used to ensure public safety. Capitalism has a motive, money; and Government has a motive, power. The motive clearly needs to be safety.

    Re: Why Alternative Energy

I don't buy the "peak oil" mantra. If oil is discovered at 30,000 ft and elsewhere well below the 16000 feet "dino line" then it isn't a fossil fuel. There is plenty created deep below the surface.

Saw a piece on oil from algae which is cost effective and can be produced in vast quantities fairly quickly.

Oh yeah and how about NeoSlevs? Vast quantities fairly quickly? You'd outsource our algae farms to China just like your branded can clothing.
