Bobby Jindal: Birth Control Should Be Over-The-Counter

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), whose name is often mentioned as a potential 2016 presidential candidate, penned an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday that calls for contraception to be made available over-the-counter.

If women could buy birth control without a prescription, he argues, employers would not have to pay for it against their moral objections, and Democrats could no longer accuse Republicans of being anti-birth control.

As a conservative Republican, I believe that we have been stupid to let the Democrats demagogue the contraceptives issue and pretend, during debates about health-care insurance, that Republicans are somehow against birth control. It's a disingenuous political argument they make.

As an unapologetic pro-life Republican, I also believe that every adult (18 years old and over) who wants contraception should be able to purchase it. But anyone who has a religious objection to contraception should not be forced by government health-care edicts to purchase it for others

Trying to pretend that health insurance NOT covering women for birth control whilst covering Viagra for men is "pro-women" (or maybe pro-rich women). Trying to make the best of a bad job I guess - he would really hate all those poor brown people to really have competent healthcare!

I dont think many people remember his 2003 campaign. He wasn't always the right wing darling we associate himself with today.

Keep in mind Jindal applauded Bush on SS reform, opposed him on his spending habits, added over 11,000 uninsured children to SCHIP, and has called for more environmental money to go into coastal regions throughout the south east.

His positions changed after his time in the US House maybe because his idealogy changed and maybe because his state forced him to.

UPDATE: 1:16 p.m. -- Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, responded to Jindal's op-ed in a statement on Friday.

“We completely agree that access to birth control should not be a political issue, and the vast majority of voters from both parties do, too," Richards said.

"We welcome Governor Jindal's thoughtful contributions to the conversation on women's health. Unfortunately, his remarks stand in contrast to some of his colleagues in Congress who have tried repeatedly to eliminate the nation’s family planning program, which helps provide low-income women with access to affordable birth control. These and other legislative attacks on women’s health are all too real, as we’ve seen just this week in Michigan. We hope that Governor Jindal will help keep policymakers at the state and federal level out of women's personal health care decisions.”

I agree with Chickie that it's a start. But there is nothing at all disingenuous, as you point out, about saying that "that Republicans are somehow against birth control". Joe Mama is right that we should look on his comments skeptically.

Nonetheless, I think there are valid reasons why some birth control is prescription. I don't think the only reason it is not OTC is to hamper availability.

I believe there are many different kinds/doses of birth control in pill form with many possible side effects. Doctors usually pick one that will work best for the patient.

But I can understand there might be a stigma to buying them in the first place. I mean, every woman who uses birth control is a whore, aren't they?

LOL ... yes we are ALL whores! LOL ..

I only used BC twice and both times it made me super sick so I don't use BC. HOWEVER, there are MANY OTC medicines that make me sick, and other's. BUT we just keep buying different ones until we find one that works! right??

I just think BC should be an OTC drug in different doses, and strengths. Make it easy for these young girls whose parents are against sex and wont bring them to the OB/GYN.

Hell no we don't like it, but most still do it. I know of only one guy who has just blatantly refused to wear one. Needless to say he was unable to pee silently anymore.
