Notre Dame is saying he was the victim of a hoax over a mostly twitter-based relationship. They are saying it was done "for the entertainment of the perpetrators." I'm listening to hawaii espn radio 1420

That was my first thought as well. A devout mormon at a Catholic college. Dating an invisible girlfriend.

On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

At best Teo was dumb enough to believe he had an online girlfriend of a year that never actually existed...he never met her, never talked to her on the phone. At worst he was in on it for whatever reason, I won't try on speculate on why.

The thing is, for him to have TRULY been duped, he would have had to have read some of the stuff that was printed about the relationship...how he met her at stanford, etc. which is all completely untrue, and never have corrected anyone about it. There were too many details for him not to be in on it IMO, unless the guy who made her up is a genius level manipulator.
