Wegman's voted best grocery store in America

Based on a Consumer Report survey from last year.

I'm not a WNY native, nor have I ever lived there, but I love hitting up Wegman's when I visit. Cool to see it get some love on the national level.

The Rochester-based Wegmans supermarket chain has one more accolade to add to its trophy wall. 24,203 Consumer Reports readers have just voted Wegmans the top U.S. supermarket chain, in the 2011 annual best and worst supermarkets survey slated for publication in the May, 2012 issue of the national consumer ratings magazine.

The May, 2012 issue of Consumer Reports, on newstands the week of April 8th, features the magazine's annual compilation of the best and worst supermarket chains in the U.S. According to Consumer Reports, Wegmans has been in the top three for the last three survey years. However, in this survey Wegmans earned 88 points out of 100 to edge out 51 other contenders for first place.

Trader Joe's, which operates nearly half its stores in California, earned 86 points and second place. Publix, with outlets mainly in the southeast, earned 85 points and third place.

The Florida based grocery store that I also really like, Publix, didn't have a bad showing either at 3rd.

It's a very cool store with the cafe being great for takeout and dining. It's also expensive, compared to many grocery chains.

Common misconception.

The cafe at Wegmans is very expensive- all their prepared food is. The markup is very high.

But if you have the discipline to go into Wegmans and just buy normal groceries, it's cheaper than pretty much everywhere except Super Wal-Mart and the military PX. And that's not my opinion- there are several media outlets that do annual price comparisons and Wegmans regularly comes in as the cheapest or close to it.

FYI, my mom had a bad experience at the Wegmans in Woodbridge, VA a few days ago. She complained, and they responded within a day and gave her a $25 gift card.

I had a bad experience at Safeway a few weeks ago. I complained and only got a canned automated response.

Ive found a few items at Wegmans I buy monthly cheaper than SWM.

The Super Wal-Mart is much cheaper for groceries. I go early every Saturday morning and avoid all the loons.

Wegmans has more people with teeth, little question.
