Mario's contract is pay as you go?

If this is right, we can walk away each year if we choose.

"The base value is $96 million. The incentives can push the deal to $100 million. At the time of signing, the deal contains fully guaranteed money in the amount of $24.9 million.
Also, another $17.1 million is guaranteed for injury only at the time of signing; $6.5 million of it becomes fully guaranteed later. It’s unclear whether the $8 million option bonus is fully guaranteed; as a practical matter, it is.
Given the $10.6 million roster bonus due in 2014, it’s a two-year, $40 million contract with a team-held option on the final four years. More accurately, it’s a two-year contract with a one-year-at-a-time decision by the team as to whether it continues."

I thought this was announced/reported shortly after he signed it? Maybe I'm confusing other deals with this one.

It was announced when he signed it, yes.
"'Clean up your room.', 'Stand up straight.', 'Pick up your feet.', 'Take it like a man.', 'Be nice to your sister.', 'Don't mix beer and wine, ever.'. Oh yeah, 'Don't drive on the railroad track.'"

"Eh, Phil. That's one I happen to agree with."

    Great.

He'll get cut next off-season and Ralph will have his excuse to not sign any big name FA's until 2018.

Re: Mario's contract is pay as you go?

Keep in mind if they cut him before paying him the $10.8M roster bonus after this season he is on the cap for $17.8M in dead money in 2014. They already have $7M in dead money next year for Fitzpatrick and $3M in dead money for Anderson next year, so if they cut him they would have a whopping $27.8M in dead money in 2014.

If they designate him a June 2 release he counts $5.4M in dead money next year and $12.4M in dead money in 2015, but that means they have to carry his full $18.4M cap number until June 1. That ties up a lot of cap and effectively keeps them from taking part in FA.

That $10.6M roster bonus next year and large salaries every year after allow the Bills to get out of his contract, but it won't be painless. They paid him a ton of money and have to account for it on the cap.

so are you saying Ralph should keep Mario if he doesn't playup to his contract? Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

Ok so...the guy had 46 tackles, 2 forced fumbles and 10.5 sacks last year on arguably the worst defense in the NFL. We all know he started off slow, but...cutting him? Because he's missing practice for a sore foot...................come on people.
The last time the Bills made the playoffs was 1999.

Re: Mario's contract is pay as you go?

obviously the cut him posts are idiotic. realistically though, the whole thing is a little bizarre. hes physically fine all offseason, excited the day before camp, and then has disappeared with a " sore foot" and marrone has literally no information, like not even some vague info like we think he just twisted it, or its a bruise, but hes going through a full evaluation... it's very odd actually

He sounds like the kid who wants to get out of taking a test in class and fakes a tummy ache.

Your cap number and the actual money you are paying out it totally different things. Ralph wouldn't care about the cap hit if he could save the 10+ million dollar roster bonus if he's not living up to expectations after this season. That's how it goes with almost any player the first year they are released after a big deal. That's why they budget the cash to crap method and count their bonuses into the current year salary instead of spreading them out in their internal cap like most teams do.

As far as the cap goes that's not a huge issue anyway. He would still count a ton towards the cap and most likely we won't be using it all next season anyway. Hell we're sitting there with 20 million dollars this year and didn't get one legitimate starter, re-sign either of our top FA's or extend any other young talent we have with it. That 20 million dollars is just going to waste this season.

    Looking at the table:

    YearCap
    Value
    Dead
    Money
    Cap
    Savings
    2012$9,800,000$24,900,000($15,100,000)
    2013$12,400,000$29,700,000($17,300,000)
    2014$18,400,000$17,800,000$600,000
    2015$19,000,000$12,400,000$6,600,000
    2016$19,900,000$7,000,000$12,900,000
    2017$16,500,000$1,600,000$14,900,000

It doesn't really make any sense to cut Mario financially any time soon, unless you want Ralph to have more money in his pocket for some reason. I'd say he should be on the team until at least through the 2015 season (or the next three years), because if you aren't paying him, there is a bunch of unspendable money anyway.

All issues of money aside, Mario is a very good player, and the Bills are a better team with him on it. I can't wait to see what he does in Pettine's scheme. All this talking of cutting bait by some people is a bit ridiculous.
