As productive as Halak and Elliott have been this season, they can’t make the intrigue go away.
No matter how well Elliott plays it’s virtually inconceivable they can anoint him their No. 1 because Halak’s postseason pedigree makes him the presumptive postseason starter. Yet Halak has been pulled against San Jose, Chicago and Anaheim since November 29, though one wonders how a lingering illness contributed to an .885 December save percentage.
Fan fixation on Buffalo Sabres goalie and 2010 Olympic hero Ryan Miller remains strong. Miller might well be moved at the trade deadline but it’s difficult to envision a scenario where the Blues, snug against the salary cap, could move enough money to offset Miller’s addition. The Blues likewise appear unlikely to surrender the bounty of young players and draft picks demanded by the rebuilding Sabres.
