My wallet is also happy that Eichel didn't score.

There is no one on the team to take the heat off him in that respect. Of course, he's going to have to learn to deal with that.

Comparing any rookie from the past decade to McDavid is a bit unfair. A generational talent as you say. And throw your best checkers against him every game and the Oilers will burn you with Nugent-Hopkins and Draisaitl.

Eichel has a lot to learn, but he'll come around. I recall another certain 2nd overall pick that was a clear disappointment his rookie year. The Sabres thought they made the right decision not taking him first overall. That judgment proved premature.
Eichel isn't even a disappointment. He's been producing. He has 41 points in 64 games. Even of he slows down and gets 9 points in the last 18 games, he hits 50. 50 points for a rookie teenager on a team thin with forward talent.

I don't know what world that's a disappointment, but not every rookie is Crosby or ovechkin. These kids have to actually learn the game and it takes time.

Round One--Advantage, McDavid. Too bad these two ended up in different conferences, it would be a lot more fun to track their careers if they faced each other more often.

I was pretty pissed when Edmonton got the first overall pick last year. I might lose my mind if they get the first overall again this year.

That said, Eichel does look a little lost at times defensively. Has has been struggling lately too and I think it is because of getting the better players playing against him. I think this will only make him better in the long run. I'm going to love watching this guy for the next 20 years hopefully.

I didn't mean to infer that Eichel was. I was talking about Shanahan. The "another" in my post was referring to his draft position.

Lehner's history. He just doesn't know it yet.

I was a little unsure what you meant as well. I had thought it was about Reinhart but didn't understand the part about not taking him first overall. Now that I see you were talking about Turgeon, I understand. Turgeon was a pretty good player too though and maybe on about the same level scoring wise as Shanahan. Though I suspect the people of Buffalo would have been much happier with the style of game Shanahan played.

I admit it was pretty subtle. I tried to be too cute. :-)

Ha, you realize that some posters on here might not have seen either play, and there is a good chance that some might not know Turgeon played for the Sabres or that we had the opportunity to take Shanahan?

I weep for those that never saw Perreault in his heyday.

I would say more accurately the difference in skill levels was on display. It was like watching College football. The good players were so much better than everyone else and it was very apparent.
