Bruce Smith on Inside the NFL

Says this DLine is the best in Bills history....

I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
    It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Is Bruce basing his statement on talent or performance?

On paper they should be very talented.

In heaven, but I agree. Sestak, McDole, Dunaway and Tom Day. Held the prolific Charger scoring machine to 10 points in two Championship games. I just wish we could have played the Browns and the Packers in those two years to see how that defense stacked up all time.

If they win a championship I'll gladly agree.

A handful of players don't win championships. Teams do.

                        Yup, in today's NFL.

Jeff Wright was certainly a weak link for most of Smith's glory years.

I always thought if Fred Smerlas plays one more year at NG, we win SBXXV. I also think he was not protected because Fred was part of the Bills old guard and Levy wanted the younger players to be the leaders. Smerlas was in the way.

That's a general sentiment because we could be run on, but Wright made a few plays in playoff games. He knifed through and tackled the Giants RB for a loss @ the 2 on third down. Forced a FG. He also read the middle screen against Denver in the AFC Championship, tipped the ball, allowing Carleton Bailey to get a pick 6.

Granted, Wright made a couple of big plays, but overall he was still the weak link of that defensive line. Hell, Don Smith made a big play in the Super Bowl, doesn't mean he was irreplaceable.
