Refs to penalize goal post dunk

Refs will penalize players who dunk over the goal post

NFL head of officiating Dean Blandino told the Dan Patrick Show that starting this season, dunks will be a penalty. Tthe NFL has a rule against using the ball as a prop, and apparently that’s the rule that will be used to ban dunks. So it’s not a new rule, it’s a new interpretation of an existing rule.

The goal post dunk became a concern when Saints tight end (or wide receiver) Jimmy Graham knocked the goal post askew while dunking in Atlanta. The NFL is also considering making the uprights longer, which would make them more top-heavy and therefore potentially more likely to fall over entirely.

i guess if its a safety hazard after new ones are installed, fine. but still, some of the celebrations are entertaining. and god forbid we be entertained. let's watch a 15 minute review on the definition of catching a ball (which now none of us really understand though we got it when we were 6). That's fun stuff. that's great for the game.

Well, I guess more people will be forced to follow Levy's maxim of "act like you've been there before." Of course, I am happy they waited to do this until after Gonzo retired.

I absolutely don't mind TD celebrations, but the dunk can damage the goalposts and delay the game.

There's a difference between entertainment and spectacle. The NFL has been devolving into spectacle for decades.

Actually that quote has been attributed to many before him. Bear Bryant for one. And the Hip immortalize it in this song which is actually about Dan Snyder, the guy that died in Dany Heatley's car.

How many times has that actually happened though?

I'm getting so tired of this mentality that every time something slightly bad happens, someone needs to create some new rule or law to make sure it never happens again. And it's not just football- it's pervasive in society.

I think a lot of people used "act like you've been there before," but Marv really loved that one. Still, as much as I love Marv, it was a bit overstated. Emotion and celebration should be part of the game. Not going overboard, but don't get out of control with it. Marv's offensive teams didn't do a lot of celebrating - spiking the ball was common, but not a ton beyond that. Of course, his defenses were loaded with celebration. Cabbage patch, Fred Sanford, group fall-downs, etc. It was constant and none of the coaches ever appeared to be upset by it. It goes both ways. I have no problem with a little celebration. Sport and competition is emotional. You reign those emotions in for long periods to perform. When you reach a particular goal, by god, celebrate a little.

    It happend just this year.

It caused a significant delay because they had to straighten the posts.

They should bring back other TD celebrations that don't have a chance of damaging the equipment.

    .
Doesn't that stink of bad goal posts? Hockey players get checked through the glass or a basketball backboard shattering. Not the players fault but a flimsy goal post can't handle a player hanging from it for a second?

I'm not advocating the hanging onto goalposts but tossing it over the goalpost in a dunk fashion is really no big deal. Didn't Gonzo do that all the time?

Wouldn't the violet spiking of a ball also be using equipment as a prop?

Indeed. That's the Dem's and Liberals' and socialists' long-time stock-in-trade...public choice theory. Distilled, these days, to "If we can save the life of one child", etc. Heh - I'm glad I'm my age. You young folk in the future - because you don't smell the bad coffee brewing unlike your elders did - will probably have to obtain a permit for letting off a climate-destroying fart.

How many game delays do you consider acceptable?

The goalposts are intentionally light so they are easy to install and remove. There is no reason to make them heavier and sturdier to support the weight of a 260lb man.

Here's a solution and there won't be any delays...

Off to the side, set up a playground with a jungle gym, swing set, and a slide. Make it really sturdy to support a large grown man. Physically grown that is. After they score a touchdown, they get to run over there and play on it through the commercial break.
