$126 Million, with $61 Million Guaranteed Kaepernick, 49ers reach Six-Year Deal

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers have signed a six-year extension through 2020, according to a source close to the situation. Kaepernick will earn up to $126 million, with $61 million guaranteed, per Rapoport. Kaepernick was entering the final year of his rookie contract, which was set to pay him under $1 million. The deal was completed in only one day of negotiations, and the team later announced the deal.

Would like to see the finer details, to see how much is back-loaded into the final years. $61mil guaranteed is going to hurt, however, regardless of the contract's actual structure.

Is he the only QB to get this large of a contract without winning a superbowl first?

I think so, but winning the SB isn't the qualifier. The problem with the QB market is that you're either elite or you're not. There is no 2nd level for contracts. So with or without a SB, Kaep gets paid.

Good for him by the way.

It's mostly fluff. It's like 13-15 mil a season. Matt Ryan didn't win the superbowl either, but he's much better than Kaep. Kaep is a primary option only or run qb. He's terrified to throw the ball on 3rd and 5 or under. Bad QB.

with $61MM guaranteed, it seems like the tier 2 contract. it has upside for him, but it's less in guaranteed money than fitz, no? didn't he get 69MM?

i think it's a fair contract for both sides. if he can put them over the top and win, he's going to look real good. if he fizzle's out like WC is saying above, he got what a starting QB gets for the results he's "shown" to date.

For the 49ers, they pay for production.

the question is how specific are the incentives. would it be something that he thinks about during a season? "if i throw 10 more completions, i'm getting an accelerator."

That is WAY too much money for a guy who hasn't won a SB yet.

the $126MM is the face value. but hte guarantee is $61MM and that's spread over 6years. his signing bonus was $13MM...just a little over a top CB FA signing money.

regardless if you think he's winning because the team is good or if he's the difference maker, i think it's pretty fair.

if the bills had a stacked team like this and a qb like kaepernick where you just don't know if he's that guy or they should be looking for a more traditional qb, i think you'd love this contract.
