How long should the coaches hope, wait and pray that, "The light goes on," for EJ Manuel?

Thad Lewis has been playing poorly and Jeff Tuel is now getting 2nd team reps in a open competition for the backup spot.

According to reports, Tuel has been playing much better than Lewis.

I might be reading in between the lines too much here, but is this the coach's way of sending a message to EJ Manuel?

The reports from training camp about EJ Manuel have not been good, hate to say that. Accuracy continues to be a big problem.

I'm starting to think that the Bills coaching staff will not hand EJ the starting job and 16 games no matter what.

They're not as, "all in," on EJ Manuel as we think.

EJ Manuel essentially has 2 preseason games to prove himself worthy of being the Buffalo Bills starting QB without competition.

If Manuel continues to play poorly in training camp, lays two eggs in the first 2 preseason games, and Jeff Tuel performs better....

What would you do?

I'd at least give Jeff Tuel a chance to win the starting job if EJ Manuel fails to improve.

What if EJ Manuel continues to struggle with his accuracy, throws 0 TD's, 7 Int's in 5 preseason games, and Jeff Tuel threw 10 TD's, and 1 Int in 5 preseason games, 3 against starters?

Defensive coordinators have had all off season to devour Manuel's strengths and weaknesses.

Schwartz is looking at game film and devising defensive plans against Manuel based on 10 games in 2013.

Manuel needs to improve, or else.

But a QB competition is a QB competition. I don't care if what Marrone said was about the backup QB fight.

If there is competition for the backup QB position, how can there not be competition for the starting position too?

A backup QB competition can turn into a starting quarterback controversy very quickly.

If EJ plays like crap in the preseason, and Tuel lights it up, fans will go crazy.

And on EJ the reports are just as positive as it is about his erratic throws. Alot of praise going his way also. We are going to be fine as long as he stays healthy IMO

I think cutting Ramses Barden is a message to Robert Woods that he better produce or the waiver wire isn't far behind for him either. Just reading between the lines, of course.

You're probably right, GingerP, but the crazy fan in me says Jeff Tuel is the next Tom Brady who has just grown into his own body.

He looked like a college quarterback last year. Just a young, undrafted rookie kid that got more experience than Tom Brady did his first year.

Brady was a tall lanky QB too, drafted in the 6th round of the 2000 NFL Draft.

He played 1 game his rookie year, throwing 3 passes for 1 completion of 6 yards.

In 2001, nobody in Boston thought Tom Brady would replace Drew Bledsoe.

Oh please, yeah right, they're going to bench a 1st-rounder last year for an undrafted free agent.

Sorry, but if Manuel continues to play poorly, he's going to start as long as he's healthy or Whaley's going to look twice as ridiculous as he's bound to look anyway. At that point he may as well just had in his resignation slip and not wait for the pink one.
