It's beginning to look like something snapped in his brain.
Here's a wild guess: whatever was burning in the exhaust system was toxic and caused his erratic behavior.
The toxic component would be carbon monoxide, which if in excess, would have asphyxiated him, caused him to conk out before any aggressive behavior could have occurred.
might have been the .218 blood alcohol level in his system. that's a lot of alcohol behind a wheel
