as it stands, they wont stay in arizona long. the lease is terminated if the team loses 50 million in 5 years. last year alone, they supposedly lost 24 million.

this is why expansion talks have stalled, i believe. with expansion, they can take their sweet ass time negotiating an arena deal (no way the NHL moves into key arena unless they have to. they wont have to if an expansion team comes about. theyll let them build the arena then come in, or play a single season at key.)

the saga in the desert is far from over.

Florida had 11,419 at their home opener. They are not going to survive.

Seattle is not going to put a shovel in the ground to build a new arena until they secure a NBA team. They want both a NHL and NBA team but will not build a new arena just for a NHL team.

Arizona improved their ownership recently with a new partner.

The NHL doesn't have a ton of leverage here, I think. I can't think of too many hockey-starved markets.

I should have added "in the US" but you are right that Canada will always be hockey starved. That said, of those only the GTA is a larger market than Phoenix, and it already has a team. The NHL is getting killed in ratings in the US. It's a regional league, and regional leagues don't get to hold cities hostage for stadiums.

except they can still terminate their lease if they lose 50 mil in 5 years. they last 24 mil last year alone.

at some point, you are going to have to call a spade a spade.

Seems to be overkill for a few boxing matches a year. Las Vegas can't support an NHL franchise.

Why would they move from the T&M Center? The state just approved $57.3 million to renovate it, I can't see them moving UNLV games.

i wouldnt be shocked if they use both arenas, like uconn uses their home arena, and the old civic center

Gary Bettman on the Glendale city council " If I lived in Glendale Id be concerned about my government" " If this is how Glendale does business I think they will have far more problems than dealing with the Coyotes"

But what benefit is that to UNLV? The campus is right off the strip, and the T&M Center holds ~19,000. The new arena is about a mile away and holds 20,000. UConn's campus is in Mansfield, and the Civic Center is in Hartford - 30 miles difference. It's to UConn's advantage to have games in a more populous area because campus is in the middle of nowhere.

It makes no sense for UNLV to move any games there given the revenue they'd give up in the process.

im just spitballing here. i knew UNLV had an oldish arena, i had no idea they were renovating it. still, youd have to imagine that UNLV will utilize the arena in some way. perhaps future tournament bids (they like new arenas, and generally not college ones anymore)
