St Louis is a contender. Getting crushed isn't the surprise. Just glad to see guys play with emotion. A higher compete level will at least make the team more competitive down the line.

    But it has be sustained.

Compete level is the most over used, mean-nothing adage being used in the hockey world.

mind numbingly meaningless as far as I'm concerned.

watching the sabres go through the motions of a bad season gets old. watching a team actually go out and skate and compete and stick up for team mates is kind of a big deal.

it most certainly means something. and its a major reason nolan had success in his early coaching career. "hardest working team in hockey"

having hasek didnt hurt, but a team that competes and tries and works is alot more fun to watch then a team simply going through the motions. its a sign that the players still care, even if it is for one night. but its nolans job to make sure it isnt simply one night.

No coach ever had to talk to me about my compete level.

Same here. But let's be honest here. Not every player shows up every shift. Or every game. They float and rely on talent and skill and don't do the little things. When guys do the little things, or at least try to, that's a good sign.

Don't get me wrong, losing 6-1 sucks.

Here's a hint... if you have to talk to a player about their compete level, perhaps they shouldn't be getting icetime or even be in the team... Hodgson.. cough.

That's why he's been dropped all the way down to the 4th line.

its funny you mention hodgson. i always believed he was going to become a second line center, but ive come to realize most games, he doesnt show up.

he would be fine on an established team where a guy giving 75% isnt going to hurt them, like the hawks or blues. but on a team like the sabres, its exposes that glaring hole ten times over.

but regardless, you are right, but thats what makes last game at least notable in that department. the sabres as a whole were just going through the motions. last night, some at least showed some life.

I agree. I always defended him, but his holes are so apparent now.

Zad was plus 3 tonight with an assist. Leave the kid in the lineup.

Zad has lost weight and gotten in better shape compared to when he was overweight in the summer.. Looks like he has gotten his head out of his ass

He did have that bad turnover though, if I'm not mistaken.

Girgs now has 8 points in 18 games. A clear improvement over his rookie season. Hes adjusting well to an expanded role.

Harrington tweet...Zadorov has now six games left to play before the Sabres have to make a decision, He can't be sent back to the London Knights because he doesn’t have a release from the Russian club that owns his rights. But if Sabres don’t keep him, they lose control of him to St. Petersburg, a KHL team.
