I think it's time for the NHL to go for a bigger ice surface...ripping out a few rows of seats won't make that much of a difference, "you can always move seats".the seating capacity for First Niagara Center is 18,690 you could rip out three or four rows of seats and move them to another part of the First Niagara Center like they did when they raised the roof on the old Aud and put in the Orange seats. There are many wasted spaces in the First Niagara Center where seats could go. Look at Madison Square Garden and what they did in their renovations they moved seats by building a catwalk that goes from one section to another.

Look at european hockey. Is that more offensive because the ice is bigger? No, it is extreme trap game so no one gets caught. I don't know this will have the intended results. Also, not every arena can afford to lose a couple of rows.

Better solution. Same ice, just go 3-on-3 the whole game!

    Winning!

Heck, get rid of the game and just have shootouts!

    Problem solved!

I don't know if they want to go full olympic or a hybrid like they used in Finland for the WJC. Either way I think it is a bad idea.

It isn't just ripping out seats, there's also infrastructure reconfigurations with the system that creates and maintains the ice.

Sure, players are bigger, but for crap sake they aren't 3 feet wide. There's plenty of room. Just need to get the refs to start enforcing the clutch and grab like they should.

They enforce it a lot more than what they used to.... nothing wrong with it.

If if anything let them use their sticks a little more... a lot of really questionable calls.

but most importantly they called for zero tolerance on hooking, holding, tripping, slashing cross-checking and interference penalties.

The last change was the most important, it was supposed to force defenders to play defense by moving their feet to get in the way of a play as opposed to just grabbing a hold of forwards as they went by. It was that change that was most important.

The plan worked, in their first year back after the stoppage, teams averaged more than six goals per game for the first time since the early 1990's. The league was praised for its new exciting brand of hockey and their television ratings and arena attendance numbers grew.

It is a disturbing trend for a game that made major rule changes just eight years ago in an effort to increase scoring, and it is the erosion of the zero tolerance policy on so called clutch and grab defense that has led to this state of affairs.
Fans and even some members of the media are beginning to take to their blogs and twitter to decry the return of the old style of defense that stymied the game.

I think that was about as good a haul as the Jets would get for a rental. Just got to hope that Dano is a decent player. He has been traded twice now so you have to wonder but I will gladly take another 1st round pick even if it will probably by right near the bottom.
