    Thanksgiving reform

Detroit and Dallas on Thanksgiving is one of the lamest traditions in sports IMO, and now the NFL expanded to three games and still managed to shut out the AFC entirely.

Here's my proposal, the Super Bowl champ gets the Thursday night opener, the other three teams who made it to the Conference Championship round each host an inter-conference game.

    So instead of
    Detroit/Chicago
    Dallas/Philly
    SF/Seattle

    we'd have:

    New England/Detroit
    San Francisco/Kansas City
    Denver/Arizona

    Thoughts?

    Sounds good to me.

It used to be really bad when the Lions and Cowboys sucked and those were the only two games.

Too bad they can't determine those games a few weeks out and match them up then.

Most of us are in a food coma by the time the halftime of the second game rolls around, either that or drunk. LOL

It's a protection mechanism.

You shroud your childish approach in a vale of pompous, intellectual garbage in an attempt to look smart and "real". You over-analyze even minute points and manipulate statistics to fit your negative view of the team. Again, to feel good about yourself and to protect from getting hurt.

Of course, the criticisms are obviously from someone who has no understanding of the team concept or what it takes to excel at athletics.

The true "realist" understands that they have no control of what happens on the field or behind the closed doors at One Bills' Drive, so they do the prudent thing for a spectator. They enjoy the games on Sunday with family and friends, cheer for their team and realize that it's just entertainment.

"I was an integral part in the drafting process of EJ Manuel," Whaley said Thursday on NFL Network's Total Access. "I was the person that handled the draft process and setting up the board."

"We are committed. I want you to believe me when I say that," Whaley said of building around the second-year quarterback, per The Buffalo News. "I always tell you guys that I'll never say never because I don't want to paint myself in a corner, but when I do say something, I do it and I mean it and I try to fulfill it."

"We believe the addition of Sammy is going to be instant impact, not only to our quarterback, but to what our offensive coordinator can come up with game-plan wise and how defenses attack us," Whaley said.

Whaley on EJ Manuel: "We think we got a gem in this guy." (2:30)

"And as Mark says, if in three years maybe he's not [our quarterback of the future], then I'll be sitting there saying 'hey guys', .... anybody got a job for me?" - Doug Whaley

    Re: Thanksgiving reform

Thanksgiving football is always a hassle anyway. Most of my family is not as into sports as I am and it becomes an argument.

Fortunately it's been 20 years since the Bills played on T day, and between the team being so bad and the games generally featuring the NFC, the games haven't had any impact on the Bills.

But, it never made sense to me that it was always Detroit and Dallas. Nothing else is set in stone like that in terms of the NFL schedule. And Dallas is usually at least decent, but historically Detroit is as bad as us. They shouldn't be guaranteed a national game every year.

Come on now, are you one of those rare people for whom the holidays among relatives never ends up in an argument(s) anyway?

Be glad it's not over an alchy uncle or bratty nieces and nephews or the like.

A great recipe for a nap: thanksgiving meal and a Detroit Lions football game.

Fine idea, but I don't really care. I'd rather spend time with the family. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.

The three games scheduled for this year all look good to me, don't really see a reason to change it.

Detroit Chicago is going to be awful, and having 0 AFC teams is reason enough for me to change it.

I think it should be the opposite.

The worst six teams on Thanksgiving.

The top dogs hate short weeks anyways, because it breaks their training routine.

    Re: Thanksgiving reform

I'm a little bit of a traditionalist, so I'd like to keep the Detroit game, regardless of their record. Screw Dallas, they just horned in on Detroit's turf to begin with. I'd be OK with the other two games being hosted by the teams that lost the conference championships though.

Could be, but I enjoy the rivalry matchup and two struggling teams with incredible WR's will be fun for me to watch. Plus my in-laws are all from Chicago and I'll be with them.

Why? Us not liking the team (Dallas) or not really caring for/about them (Detroit) isn't a legitimate reason for it to be stupid.

    Re: Thanksgiving reform

i agree that the 1pm game isn't good for the actual meal. my mom always demands all hands on deck and historically that meant a lot of yelling as some of us snuck out to see the game in the living room. We've since added a TV to the kitchen at their house and it's a little more sensible, but still, a game is meant to be watched sitting. not while cooking.

i like the addition of a primetime game instead of watching a christmas movie.

    Re: Thanksgiving reform

Dallas jumped on the bandwagon in the late 70's. I remember the Bills upsetting the St. Louis Cards on the road Thanksgiving Day with FB Jim Braxton having a huge game. Around 1975.

I would like to see it change to fresh faces every year.

    Re: Thanksgiving reform

I'm bumping this thread because now that the 4 CCG particpants are known, I can speculate about what the matchups would be under my plan. So, whoever wins the SB would get the opening day game, with 3 others picked from:

    Philadelphia @ New England
    New Orleans @ Indianapolis
    Kansas City @ Green Bay
    Pittsburgh @ Seattle

Come on now, that's a great crop to pick from. Aside from New Orleans (whom I think will rebound), those are all top opponents.
