NEWARK, N.J. -- The New Jersey Devils will go with an unconventional coaching structure for the remainder of the 2014-15 season, naming Adam Oates and Scott Stevens as co-coaches to replace the fired Pete DeBoer.
President and general manager Lou Lamoriello, who will go behind the bench in a supervisory role with Stevens and Oates on an interim basis, made the announcement Saturday morning, less than 24 hours after firing DeBoer.

"It's certainly been a very interesting last 48 hours," Lamoriello said. "The decision was made to go forward. I tried to come up with, in my opinion, what was the best way to get our team to do certain things and get the most out of personnel we have."

Lamoriello admitted it was a unique situation to have two men in charge of the bench. He also said it would be for a short period of time. Lamoriello said he intends to have one full-time coach for next season. He said it could be Oates, Stevens or an outside candidate.
