Re: Bills trade for Matt Cassel

As much as I'm not sold on Cassel, I do like that the GM tries to fill the holes before the draft so that we can truly take BPA. He seemed to do it last year acquiring Williams X 2, Graham, Spikes and Boobie before the draft and it looks to be happening again. Spending cap space isn't the end of the world. There are ways to get cap space.

I fail to see how it is.

If we signed Cassell as an FA for $3 million or less, I wouldn't be thrilled but I would understand due to the lack of available QB's. But he's not so much better than the other options that it was worth giving up that much for him.
I tend to agree with you here, but I'm not so bent out of shape as to be all that upset about it.

I think the concern is over allocation of resources. Could the Bills have signed a similar free agent QB (e.g., Hoyer, Moore, etc.) for similar money without giving up any picks (which, since the Bills are getting close to the cap, would be useful as low cost depth players)? Similarly, is allocating such a large amount of money to a running back the right call in todays NFL, when also considering that they gave up a cheap asset in the process?

Those are legitimate questions, as Hughes and Searcy are not likely out of reach, as well as some other desired free agent options.

Well, if you squint real hard and ignore that team was one year removed from one of the best seasons of all time and had Hall of Famers all over the roster....

It wouldn't surprise me if CIN makes a bid for Searcy.

OK the way I see it is we traded a 5th for Cassell and a 7th for their 6th. Is that not correct?

Or we swapped our extra 5th for their 6th and threw in next years last round pick, and they gave us a neverwasmightofbeenhasbeen QB that's probably better than Orton.

Re: Bills trade for Matt Cassel

I have to give it to OBD for at least being active and trying to improve the roster but I don't agree with the Cassell trade simply because of the money he's owed. I could care less about the picks we traded.

We could have easily waited for FA to hit and signed Hoyer, maybe it would have cost close to $5M, but he's better than Cassell.

Look for the Bills to draft a QB on Day 3 and that's what we're going with this year.

Re: Bills trade for Matt Cassel

To be fair, someone at bb.com MB posted a bunch of stats for all of the mediocrity league FA QBs, and Cassell actually had pretty much the best set, from experience, W/L, TDs/Ints etc.

It leaves me completely underwhelmed tbh, but I can see the rationale behind it, and numbers wise, Cassell does appear to be better than most of the bunch. The money isn't exhorbitant, and neither are the picks.

for HOF Kiko saw Moss, Brady (who didn't play), and Wilfork? who else did you see?

they had some great role players/lockerroom guys like Adalius Thomas, Bruschi, Welker, and Seymour.

Bills can play name games too, Buffalo has Dareus, Mario and Kyle, Sammy, McCoy, Bradham, Gilmore ETC.

what you're saying is that team reminds you of the '01 Ravens with Dilfer/Banks at QB more so, then a team with its own identity led by QB Matt Cassel?

Not overly thrilled, but I wasn't expecting much in the QB department this offseason.
