Re: Bills trade for Matt Cassel

This might be the first smart move we have seen to upgrade the QB position and not 'fix' it in years. Cassel can play in the right situation. So we gave up a draft position for some movement at the QB position. Maybe we can get another FA QB maybe we can't that remains to be seen ... but we could get Cassel today and the pulled the trigger. Even if they end up cutting him it was worth the trade to improve the position. In our best case scenario we are cutting him and people are *****ing about the waste when TODAY this is a solid move to improve the team. We could end up cutting EJ too if he doesn't show in camp he's useless at this point and needs a new situation. I would love to get another guy and have all three lighting it up in camp and have that kind of problem. This is a 'let's build some security' move.

We swapped our 5th for their 6th and give them a 7th in 2016. Who cares. Plus any FA will likely be more expensive than Cassel.

He's better than McNown without question.

He's a little more polished than Hoyer.

McCoy, Incognito, Cassel. The Bills are far from great. But the offense is a lot more solid in a couple of positions of need.

    Swiper is happy.

None of these names excites anyone anyway. I'd much happier with Cassel than Josh McCown.

I have to agree with him on this one.

McNown was kind of horrid most of the time he played. Sure he can hand off, but don't like his arm as a pro QB.

Hoyer is a mix of ups and downs. And he just kept digressing as the season progressed last year.

Cassel also has had some bad. But also had a couple of periods of good play. He has more of a resume with good play on it than just about anyone out there. He can be the game manager we were hoping Orton would be.

Cassel is good as they come for a replacement for Orton. I don't mind this move that much as all it means if we acquired a QB who will be on the 53 man roster and competing for a starting spot and moved from pick 175 (estimate) for pick 211 not bad considering pick 175 wasn't ours to begin with.

the logic that any pick wasnt really the bills is like when ppl say they are playing with the casinos money. thats just a foolish trick you play on yourself man, as soon as that ѕhit comes out of the slot machine ITS YOURS. those were the bills picks and had exactly the same value as if they were awarded by the league for final standings or compensatory picks

I was estimating the pick value with compensatory picks in there. Yet honestly if you're going to tell me that if we got someone at pick 175 that he going to contribute more as a rookie than a Matt Cassel could in 2015 then I'd debate that through and through.

Re: Bills trade for Matt Cassel

well i agree but thats not what i was talking about

in any event, ej is gonna start the season

cassel just isnt that good. hes fine as an insurance policy and probably the best easily accessible option out there (ie. a free agent or cheap trade like he was). but he is at best going to be 'acceptable' as a starter. cassel is cast in stone, you know exactly what youre gonna get, and thats minimally acceptable production that you would be looking to upgrade the whole time

ej, otoh, still has potential upside he might grow into. his first year he was forced into the lineup where he had a first time nfl OC with the mind bottlingly bad decision not to have a qb coach for ej that year. plus hes a much better runner and that always helps

the bills simply have to find out how much ej has progressed and if he will be able to cash in on that dreaded potential. nothing that happens in camp is going to give them that answer. their career numbers are actually quite similar, so it seems pretty obvious you go with the young guy who could still emerge as a much better option, and if he again ѕhits the bed like the two games before he was yanked you cash in the insurance policy that is cassel

I think EJ has to earn the starting job, he'll likely get most of the first team reps early but if he struggles like he did this past preseason I wouldn't be shocked that Cassel gets the job and assuming he stays healthy won't look back. Again to me I don't have a problem with Cassel or the trade my biggest issue is McCoy's salary as he's a great talent but one has to wonder if he can do it here and/or if it's for the sake of sacrificing the defense (see cap hit and liklihood we'll lose Hughes) which is the main reason we won 9 games last season.

Nah, he's got more starting exp than either, younger than McCown, healthier than Hoyer with better short range accuracy. Decent play action guy. He's not going to win many shootouts, but Hoyer and McCown won less.

He's not so bad, not so good either, but probably the aging mold of what Ryan/Roman want Manuel to be.

They were looking for a vet (and got one) and most likely were going to pay in that range anyway. The draft picks aren't really a big deal, still think they'll take one plus add an UDFA to start with 5 arms. Let's face it, ANY QB brought in at this point, with this class (both FA and the draft) wasn't going to blow anybody's doors off anyway. Regardless of opinion of the acquired players, I like that Whaley continues to be aggressive and is making moves that will allow the team to go BPA with whatever picks they have left.

It is undetermined what kind of team the Bills are building, but nobody can call them boring this off season.

I could agree with that better if they'd gone after Iupati not Incognito, defaulted to the equally useless Sanchez, picked up a dime a dozen RB in the draft or UDFA, kept enough money to resign Hughes, kept Alonso for the Ryan system, and went after BPA tight end first pick they have. I don't see where Whaley's aggressive is helping anything much.

Didn't they say they were going to go after someone that no one was really talking about? I guess they were telling the truth.

We can still go after a FA guard, I'd rather have Cassell than Sanchez (just because, it's not like either is measurably better), now we're more stacked at RB than we have ever been, Hughes must be looking for real bank and doubt he'll get it here anyway, Alonso isn't a great fit, and we can still go BPA with TE in the draft. We needed a QB, G and RB this off season, and Whaley has acquired all three before the league year has even ended. I'm OK with that.

Don't like Cassel one bit but he's no worse than what the other options realistically were.

The cap space complaint is a bit weak right now, we know the Bills are going to try and redo Shady's deal to convert some of his base salary to bonus money and get his cap number lowered.

Let's all just calm down and see how this plays out. At least they are keeping us entertained.

Re: Bills trade for Matt Cassel

Rounds 2-3 of the draft could produce another starting G/C type that could play immediately. TE would be nice but not a dying need. (Would like to see more of Gray)
Safety if Searcy walks ? What about Duke Williams or Rambo (who picked off A. Rodgers twice in the GB win).

I wouldn't mind Wynn coming back. In his limited opportunities, he played well at DE. Get Bryant back at DT. He and Charles looked good when spelling the starters.

I'm sure the Bills have their eyes on a couple guys, come this Tuesday but i don't feel the imagined " pressure ' like some...especially after aquiring Incognito, McCoy and Cassel early.
