The freshman forward is expected to be the second pick of the 2015 NHL draft, right behind Erie Otters center Connor McDavid of the Ontario Hockey League. The NHL teams with the best shot of landing Eichel figure to be Buffalo, Arizona, Edmonton and Toronto.
While many have assumed the newly minted Hobey Baker Award winner would be the classic one-and-done star, it might not be the slam dunk some think.
Former Terrier Colin Wilson was selected seventh overall by Nashville in the 2008 NHL draft, but returned to lead the Terriers to the 2009 NCAA title. Current Blackhawks star Jonathan Toews was the third pick in the 2006 NHL draft, but went back to North Dakota for another season.
Eichel discussed the advantages of a return engagement on Commonwealth Avenue.
“It would be another great year of development, college hockey and life with coach (David) Quinn,” Eichel said. “There are positives to it any way you look at it. At the end of the day, when a decision has to be made, I will make it with my family and with my heart. I don’t want to be somewhere that I don’t want to be.”
