A source close to the situation tells me the Sabres' offer is "in the range of $50 million dollars"
Rumored $50 million total compensation package is total of salary and bonuses (make ECF, Cup Finals) over long term (6-7 years)
If true, this might be the best $50 million ever spent by the Sabres. (Or the worst, depending on how things shake out.)
Presuming Babcock is hired, that may very well enable some decent FA's to sign with the Sabres.
Presume nothing. The offer is there. His decision is still up in the air.

I don't care how much we're overpaying for a Hall of Fame coach, not my money.

Let's say it works out, and the Sabres win a Stanley Cup in 4 years, right around the same time that ground is being broken on the new Bills stadium in the Old First Ward, coinciding with the first broadcast of OneBuffalo Sports Network.
Well worth the investment, I'd say.
This is the difference between Terry and Ralph. The willingness to spend whatever it takes on coaches and players. Terry is a super-fan with unlimited resources. And we are the beneficiaries.

few worries about babcock. 1. if you remember, alot of free agents spurned the red wings, and historically, they didnt have that problem. some people believe that was because of babcocks high intensity coaching. that it was a turn off. 2. coastals offseason becomes a reality. im afraid that babcocks arrival will mean that expectations skyrocket, and young, promising players like zad will be moved to get established, win now players. the rebuild is working, and the sabres have a **** ton of youth that is going to translate into one HELL of a core. i dont want that broken up.
Has to be a balance. The problem with the Oilers was all these kids and no Vets means no playoffs in 10 years despite all the high picks. Sabres have drafted a ton of young guys and still have an excessive amount of draft picks. Sign/trade to get another 2-3 established forwards since scoring is badly needed.
I thought the local news reported Babcock was going to make his decision today, after talking with his family.

Yes, that's what he said he was going to do.
i think he's more proven than rex, so it makes sense that he's more expensive. plus in football, it seems like long term means 3-5 years while in hockey long term is 5-10 years for both players and coaches. So it's not an apples to apples comparison.
AS for FA, it's really thinned out with those long term contracts for high performers. they get locked up. he's going to have to get the core to perform for him. and he should see he has an owner who will listen to him. if eichel is the real deal and babs wants him signed to along term deal...he knows that will happen. that wasn't true with TommyG.
Babcock isn't a riskless endevor. I worry about the bowman syndrome. great before buffalo and after buffalo but struggles in buffalo. the curse could be real.
