Wow, Carpenter may be in serious trouble here

And for that matter, the Bills, too. The last thing you need is a missed field goal for a defense oriented team.

But really who is out there. The Steelers has gone on their 3rd one now due to injury.

I think Dan will be fine. But if he misses a few to start the season, I'd bet he's gone.

Still not so sure. History says if Rex is really mad, changes are made ...

There are a few teams having two kickers right now. Saints, Dolphins, Bengals, Giants, etc. Someone will be available after the last round of cuts.

The thing is Jordan Gay might be a collateral casualty should the Bills decide to go for a guy who's doing both.

Radio hosts in NYC talking about the Jets a couple a days ago all agreed they were glad that "the Rex circus is outta here now...."

Not a huge shock, he was cut in Miami for inconsistency before he came here. Him finding his groove has been nice but it shouldn't surprise anybody that he would potentially struggle again.

Gotta wonder if he's trying to pull an "Orton" and taking the money and running. I'm sure the Steelers and a few others would welcome him.

Great. We have barely gotten over the instability at QB and now all we need is a kicker problem.

Kickers are a strange lot. They can get hot for a long run then suddenly just lose it. Then it becomes a mental issue they fight to overcome.

Never knew how he got hurt in the 1st place but he lives by his leg and if it's still hurt, he's on the bubble. 3 missed FG's and a missed XP makes any coach squirm.

Barely. At least we have one named and an actual direction.

Both Carpenter and Gay should be cut. Scour the waiver wire and bring in someone who does both.

    They'll be kickers available.

Agreed. Many sure thing kickers suddenly dropped off the face of the Earth. See Mike Vanderjagt and Jeff Reed.

People complain about keeping Jordan Gay, well look no further as to why we need one because of Carpenter. No doubt he's been a great field goal kicker but if he keeps struggling it makes more sense to replace him with a guy that can handle both duties and free up a roster spot.

I watched Gay kick at camp. He missed a ton of kicks. Don't believe he's a fallback option and his shaky roster spot actually depends on whether Carpenter is kept.

what is his cap hit? didn't he sign a deal this year? he was so automatic at 50+ last year. Sad to see him struggle.

but remember norwood was really good up until he missed the superbowl kick and then struggled for 2 years and was gone.

i don't know the pysche of a kicker, but frankly, if carpenter's cap hit is significant, i would rather lose a game with carpenter missing than losing a game with a newbie kicking. in that second scenario we'll all wonder what would have happened if we just kept carpenter.

I'm not an expert on placekicking, but it seems to me that that skill would all hinge on muscle memory, proper form, etc. If he had a hamstring injury, then there is no way that you can practice that muscle memory and it would take time to come back. And kickers seem to have the same psychological makeup as hockey goalies, once they're rattled it doesn't come back easily. I hope he can get it together-he was huge for us last year but with nine days til the opener it seems a little shaky.

Norwood wasn't very good at long distance kicks, the Super Bowl kick was even tougher because it was on grass which is tougher than turf, especially the type that was used in the 1990s.
Norwood only lasted one more year & was gone. That year the Bills had Brad Daluiso as the kickoff specialist. After that Christie was signed for all kicking duties & kicked the winning FG in the comeback game.
