I don't know what this shows since a smarter player should be able to study faster than someone who isn't as smart. Also, if someone wastes time during their study time, the tablet will be open longer.

I don't know what this specific tracking program focuses on, but data mining can actually show you quite a lot. Facebook tracks every word you type into their site, even ones you don't actually post. Amazon tracks how long you spend on each page of a Kindle book.

It would be easily possible to track how much the players were actually using the tablet, regardless of how long it's open. If it doesn't register any touch inputs for a minute and the gyroscope doesn't move, it's almost certainly sitting there ignored.
