A Guy Like Me - John Scott

He did a great job with this. I am not a fan of his. But I certainly respect his honesty in this piece.

    http://www.theplayerstribune.com/a-guy-like-me/
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
    It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

He can blow me... I don't care how the NHL is or isn't handling this.

    you don't belong there, Jon.

have some respect for the game and bow out.

on the other hand... the All-Star game is a joke so his presence is appropriate.

Re: A Guy Like Me - John Scott

I agree with the last three sentences for the most part - although there is a very good reason for him to not bow out.

You're wrong on the first one though.

The NHL created this scenario. They allowed the fan voting to pick the captains. They continue to have this game that they say is for the fans and then don't like who the fans vote in. Their reaction - bring a man's family into the picture? Tell him he's going to shame his family?

    Disgusting and embarrassing.

As for him dropping out, they just suspended Toewes and Ovechkin a game for dropping out and did the same to Crosby last year. There is also a nice chunk of money for Scott to make by being there. Is he just supposed to give that money up?

I still think Scott is probably the least talented player I've seen play on a regular basis in the NHL. But the league is in the wrong here, not him.

My opinion is if the fans voted him in, they are probably the ones who will watch it. Let them have their fun. I'm not going to watch it so don't really care if he goes or not.

Re: A Guy Like Me - John Scott

**** the NHL. What a thrill for him! Whether deserved or not, he's going to have 'All Star Game' on his hockey resume, and that's something they can never take away from him. From the article he sounds like a pretty nice guy, offering a fair assessment of his skills and how lucky he is to be there.

From the bad light it puts them in, I doubt the NHL can be at all thrilled about this article. Or moving on to conspiracy theories 101, perhaps the NHL set it all up in an attempt to draw attention to the ASG , which most people could give a **** less about. Bad press is better than no press.

IMHO the guy deserves to be there just for all he's gone through in his career, just the changing teams and having to move so many times from city to city. Personally I think there should be a couple players every year like this who never had/have a chance of being in the ASG. I'm sure it means a lot more to them than the prima -donna super stars who don't even want to be there.

The NHL owes this guy an apology. Totally classless.

The guy deserves to be there, he was voted in. I hope he has a ball there. And I hope his family can be there to celebrate and be with him, cheering him on..

    So again **** the NHL..

As an aside, I'm sure there are many Sabres fans thinking if this was a Sabres player the NHL would be changing the rules used in determining All Star players in the future.

Have fun John! (and great article btw )

I'm watching. I think 3v3 is great, just like in street bball. Who gives a **** about the drama. It's sticks and pucks and goal lights.

Re: A Guy Like Me - John Scott

I guess the NHL could have locked him out if they really wanted.

Scott was traded out of the Pacific Division and demoted out of the league on January 15, 2016 in a move that sent Scott to the Montreal Canadiens, who in turn assigned him to the American Hockey League's St. John's IceCaps; the trade was expected to make him ineligible to serve as captain in the All-Star Game;[15] however, the NHL announced shortly after the trade that he would be permitted to participate.[16]

Jon Scott has earned his existence by being a pugilist.

Some interwebs redditors think they're edgy and oh so counter culture so scheme him into the All-Star game.

the NHL doesn't really want this, so scheme themselves to get him out.

now he's going to cry victim?

this is where moonie is right... the pussification of the American male and the everyone's a politically correct victim mentality of this country is disgusting.

He asked fans not to vote him in. Now that he is, someone asks him if his kids will be proud of him for going? That is crossing the line.

He was voted in. Yes he makes a living fighting, but he is still in the NHL. He would skate circles around virtually everyone you or I know. He should be allowed to play and I'm glad they are letting him. Didn't see the same amount of hate for Girgensons when he clearly didn't deserve to be there last year.

Thanks for posting. I feel the same about him that you do. But that was a tremendously written piece. And I have some new-found respect for him. And, well, Gary Bettman can F-off.

No doubt he was terrible. No disagreement. But the worst Sabre I ever saw up close was Jerry Korab during his last hurrah in 1984/1985. Should have never been allowed out on the ice.

With runner up being Richard Smehlik.

    No.

he's saying that they don't need to family shame him into leaving when there is money to be earned.

This isn't scotts fault. Hopen he has fun. He shouldn't be there, but the NHL created this mess. They should lie in it.

And bringing up his family was just pathetic. Have fun, John scott. Joke or not, he's there.

Once the NHL opens it up to a vote from the fans, they have NO business manipulating it if it doesn't turn out how they like.
"'Clean up your room.', 'Stand up straight.', 'Pick up your feet.', 'Take it like a man.', 'Be nice to your sister.', 'Don't mix beer and wine, ever.'. Oh yeah, 'Don't drive on the railroad track.'"

"Eh, Phil. That's one I happen to agree with."

He always seemed to be a likeable, funny guy, and a great fighter.

And... he had more goals than Ville Lieno in his last season in Buffalo.
