12 times the #1 defense has faced the #1 offense...this makes the 10th time the defense has prevailed. And that's just the 1 v. 1 match ups.

None of them had Lesean McCoy and Jerome Felton.

Denver D dominated Ben R, Brady and then Cam. That's a hell of a run.

Isn't this a bit of a misnomer in that you are using different statistics for determining what constitutes the number one offense (points per game) versus the number one defense (yards per game)? No doubt Carolina benefited from the huge number of takeaways their defense generated during the regular season.

In the last 20 Superbowls, I'd bet a handful, at most, were won because of Defense.

Yes it does. Defense always trumps offense.

Too bad Rexy decided to turn our elite defense into a middling nonchalant unit.

didn't he say at his introductory press conference that being the 4th ranked defense isn't good enough?
Maybe he's stupid and thinks it's better for the numbers to go up. Ha.
    I came.

When was the last Superbowl won pretty much exclusively by defense before yesterday?

Super Bowl XLII back in 2008?

With the rules they way they are, that is only true in some cases anymore. Before 2003, that was true 98% of the time. Of course, the reason for the rules changes are the K-Gun and The Greatest Show On Turf. The league wanted all high scoring games.

Today, The league office is jacking off because it can talk about Manning going out a winner for the next year, Manning can sell more jerseys and pizzas. Elway finally bought another championship for Denver and the refs didn't even have to help the Broncos too much. If they really believed in safety, Aqib Talib would have been ejected for trying to twist Brown's head off.

Defense used to win championships and it did yesterday.

It doesn't change the fact the NFL is a joke and a shadow of it's former self.

meanwhile the Cotchery catch - no catch is still being reviewed and statisticians are still tallying up the penalty yards for each club... Worse that a Florida recount.

The game is now a snooze fest. Mark my words.... the NFL will somehow modify rules to make the vastly effective edge rushing approach on D less effective to up the scoring. DBs can't use their hands. OL has to count to 5 Mississippi. 1 foot in bounds is coming. All to make the product better.

    Re: So...for the umpteenth time...

See I don't agree with defenses winning championships really ever.

9 times a Superbowl MVP has been a defensive player...27 times it's been a QB.

There are very few Superbowls that played out like yesterday where both teams played outright pitiful on offense, Ravens vs Giants was another.

The NFL wants to sell a product, especially on its biggest stage, that is compelling and worth watching. Yesterday's game was kind of boring but still fun to watch as it was an all out slugfest from both sides. What the NFL wants to avoid is Superbowls like the one two years ago where the Hawks beat the Broncos 43-8 or the Giants losing 34-7 to the Ravens or the Cowboys 52-17 drubbing.

These games have huge advertising dollars attached to them and it would be a hard sell on these corporations for ad time in the 3rd and 4th quarter if the game is already all but over at halftime. People might click the game off to something else, people just might have it on as background noise to other activities for their parties, etc...

So the rules in large part are set up to try and keep games as close as possible so fans worldwide are on the edge of their seats and give the game their full and undivided attention.

You said defense never won championships, but then say the league wants to avoid blowouts.

The first 30 Super Bowls were mostly blowouts with Cowboys/Stealers twice in the '70's, 49ers/Bengals, Bills/Giants being the exceptions.

Tell me Green Bays defense, Kansas City, Doomsday I, and II, Raiders 70's, Steel Curtain, '85 Bears, New Englands first three, Giants in all their SB's weren't the reason they won. You could make a case for the 49ers defense as well.

If it weren't for defense, the total number of Super Bowl rings in the Manning household would still be zero.
