    QB Hand Size

Jared Goff: 'I've never had a problem' with size of hands

    How important is it?

Goff, the former Cal quarterback rated as one of this year's top draft prospects, sneered, scoffed and grimaced at the latest predraft chatter that small hands might hurt his stock. Goff measured in at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds with 9-inch hands, a size that drew gasps from draftniks.Typically a good hand size for a quarterback is 9½ inches minimum, with 10 inches or more ideal.

ESPN's Todd McShay wrote that hand size equates to ball security and that since 2008, less than 10 percent of quarterbacks measured at the combine had hands 9 inches or smaller.

Hand measurements are taken from thumb to pinky, with the hand placed on a flat surface.

One NFL coach who promised his team would come out of the draft with a quarterback said hand size does matter.

    Re: QB Hand Size

Chip Kelly, the 49ers new coach, described any quarterback’s hand size as: “Huge. You better have big hands. Russell Wilson is 5-10 1/2 but he’s got 10 ¼ hands. You better have a big paw to manipulate the football.”

OK, then what about a quarterback with, say, 9-inch hands?

Kelly responded: “They’re measureables. They’re guidelines. They’re not like, ‘He has 9-inch hands. He’s out.’ ”

Of the 21 quarterbacks drafted in the first round since 2008, only Miami’s Ryan Tannehill had hands that small, according to ESPN.

Of course it matters. Handling the ball is all about control, and larger hands = better control, generally speaking. It isn't as large of a factor as other characteristics, but one that should at least be considered.

From the wrist to the tip of the longest finger???
Political correctness ( or cancel culture as it is called today) is a doctrine fostered by a delusional ,illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by MSM which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

    Re: QB Hand Size

My throwing hand measures 9.5". I have very average size hands. Seems 9" is a tad smallish.

    No jokes please.

Bills win Super Bowl 25 if Jeff Hostetler had 9 inch hands. Remember the play in the end zone when Bruce grab his right hand with the ball in it and Hostetler held on for the safety and not a fumble?

    Re: QB Hand Size

The thought process is that with a bigger hand, not only can you grip a football better but that you can put a tighter spiral on it which allows the ball to cut through elements better. It's not a universal theory but there are scouts who will recommend a team take a QB completely off their team board off nothing more than hand size.

Yeah they made a big deal about EJ's hand size, and he still sucks.

I have a throwing hand that measures 10 1/2 inches. I can't remember who it belonged to though.

This topic makes me think about Jon Kitna. Had the smarts, enough arm strength and technique, but his small hands conspired. Still, he carved out a decent career.
