WGR suggesting the Sabres go get Vanek

    LOL.

I thought about it for a minute. Then I LOL.

Just go get somebody else please.

His poor effort wore thin here, then in Montreal, now in Minnesota.

His lackadaisical attitude and defiance of the coaches would ruin this young core.

While you're at it, let's send Moulson to Minny too.

I like Matthew Coller. I don't like too many. He seems like a nice kid who reports the day-in, day-out perfunctory stuff. But he stepped out onto a gang-plank here.

Has anyone considered that the snark might be strong with Mr. Coller?

I actually wouldn't hate the move. Guy was really good in shootouts and is a sniper. Plus, he was at his best when he wasn't expected to put the team on his back. He is deadly standing in front of the net on the power play.

He isn't expected to be much in minny and is worse there than with us when he was asked to be a top line player.

Straight up trade Moulson for Vanek would work for me.
Lehner's history. He just doesn't know it yet.

I agree he's good in shootouts but a sniper? He couldn't even consistently score 30 in a season and when he played, you could guarantee RJ was going to say something to the effect of "ooooohhh and Vanek tips it just wide of a wide open net!"

Yeah he went to the dirty areas and wasn't afraid to take a punishment but he just didn't have the skill to score consistently. And he was anything but a leader.

Roy, Pominville and Vanek all had some value, but relying on those three to be the core of the team was what doomed Reiger. Incredibly short-sighted.

I remember his rookie year. He had like 10 wrap around goals.

It's easy when you're on the third line and have guys like Drury and Briere in their prime drawing the top players from the other team.

Another thing: he's not an elite level skater. Don't get me wrong- it would be stupid to say he's a bad skater. But when you look at top 6 forwards around the NHL, most just have something that he lacks.

OP has it right. He also lacks a big intagible: heart. Vanek lacks heart.

Vanek was at his best when he has someone else create for him. He simply was better off the puck. Now, do I think Vanek paired with someone like eichel would elevate his play? You bet. But unless it's a cheap signing, I'd rather give that spot to a kid to grow with the team.

And Vanek is declining. It's unfortunate, but he isn't the same player he was with the sabres. He's a complimentary winger now. And probably not for much longer.

Anthony mantha has drawn comparisons to vanek. He needs someone else to create for him as well. Good player, best off the puck.

But there is the chance that he's the perfect match for Eichel.

I believe the Sabres will sign a couple good young players this summer and stay with building from within. They have picked so well the last few years and will probably get another top player in Round 1 this year with more solid picks for the future to follow.
