This is my first mock of the offseason. I debated hard whether or not to take Butt or not but to me he's got some Tyler Eifert in him and you pair that with Watkins and Clay it could make our offense scary good.

The lack of a 4th round pick is really grating on my nerves when I run the simulator. There's quality still available in 4.

Trubisky was there, so I snagged him. Can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket, amirite?
Anderson may actually be better suited for a 34, but he's a play-maker, can rush the passer, and man the strong side. He drops into coverage for Bama too.
Pocic is great value in the third, eventual replacement for Wood, can work in at guard.
Yeah, not having a fourth sux.
Paris has good size, I'd move him to safety full time.
Lawrence is a little skinny but has good ball skills.
Godwin may not be a burner, but he has nice size and knows how to use it, not only going after the ball but can be physical with corners.

I stopped my nightly dates with the simulator until I know whether or not we're going Tampa-2. Tampa-2 even if personally distasteful, shifts the whole thing to needing wee, fast run to the ball guys on defense.

Now I'm curious what a Tampa-2 mock will look like! I say do it! Jabrill Peppers in Rd 1!

    Re: 2017 draft simulator

I did my own Tampa 2 mock. When Peppers went 9th, in true Bills fashion I panicked. I decided I had to draft the next best LB with the speed and size to fit the defense. This will bring back memories of the Donte Whitner pick and will probably be the worst choice in the entire first one and ridiculed by Mel Kiper Jr. My other LBers also fit the speed and size requirement but McKinley has the ability to be a top edge rusher as the defense evolves away from the Tampa 2. Since Gilmore is gone and my HC needs corners for his systems to work, I tabbed who is likely the 5th best corner in the draft in Cameron Sutton. Harlow provides depth for the offensive line having starting the final 7 games at LT. Joshua Dobbs is undersized, lanky, and a dual threat. Why spend 27m for a QB when I can get something similar in Round 6. I was instantly sold when he was still on the board, even if I might have been able to sign as a UDFA

    Re: 2017 draft simulator

I went a little more offensive then I intended, but overall I'm pretty happy with the results.

    R1P10 - S JABRILL PEPPERS, MICHIGAN
Best Player Available and fits a position of need. Not sure if he's a SS or WLB in the McDermott Cover 2 scheme but I have faith that they find a way to get him involved in the defense.

R2P12 - OT GARETT BOLLES, UTAH
Best OT on the board at the time. I'm still not 100% sold on Cyrus and we need a third option. Bolles is an older prospect but he may be the best OT in the class with size, athleticism and raw power. Can play LT or RT.

    R3P11 - C ETHAN POCIC, LSU
Just too much value in Pocic to not pick him in Round 3. Can play anywhere along the interior and eventually take over for Eric Wood.

R5P12 - QB NATHAN PETERMAN, PITTSBURGH
Best Senior QB in the draft, Peterman is the guy to watch next week in Mobile. He was originally a Tennessee recruit who transferred in 2015.

R5P27 - RB ALVIN KAMARA, TENNESSEE
Straight value pick here as Kamara is the kind of back who could take over for McCoy in a year or two. Extremely shifty runner with excellent speed and a good pass catcher.

    R6P11 - K DANIEL CARLSON, AUBURN
Yes, a kicker. Best in CFB and should be able to replace Carpenter.

Didn't get the DT, LB, or WR I was hoping to land, but there were more than a few names who looked interested as UDFA's.

Peterman is interesting, pro-style offense background, I've read previously. Looking forward to seeing him in Mobile. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if they take Carlson.

Anyone else have Myles Garrett drop to them? I used the Bleacher Reports ratings (that had Garrett as 1) and Fanspeak's needs and Garrett dropped to me. He doesn't fit a need, but, I had to grab him.

Never, but I always use CBS. Lately though OT Cam Robinson keeps being there.

    Re: 2017 draft simulator

Assumptions. It's going to be a Tampa-2 defense whether or not I like it. Too many FA's to keep both Taylor and Gilmore. I'd have to keep Taylor for consistent, though less than spectacular results at a more critical position because we're going to have a lot of DB's out on the field to cover each other, lessening Gilmore's supposed press excellence. Taylor is not going to win games, but he's less likely to lose them (if you appreciate the nuance of not being able to win them either).

10: R1P10 S JABRILL PEPPERS MICHIGAN : Tampa-2 needs run to the ball, versatile hybrid guys. Peppers stands out in this.

44: R2P12 CB DESMOND KING IOWA : Tampa-2 needs versatile hybrid guys. King might be a better safety. He'll be both. Can cover, heads to the ball. Competitor.

75: R3P11 C ETHAN POCIC LSU : Need to go o-line here. I like Pocic. Center, guard, right tackle ? Yes. I wanted Taylor Moton for RT figuring I can live with Eric Wood and Groy a while longer, but NE swiped him on me at the end of the previous round. Didn't think he'd last anyway.

157: R5P12 DL DEANGELO BROWN LOUISVILLE : Wait a minute Mace, you're figuring gap shooting Tampa-2 and taking a tank NT who can bench 225 40 times coming off an acl injury for fearsome strength and limited mobility ? Damn right. Pat Williams stuffed runs for Minnesota, Kevin Williams was the fast guy. Kyle hangs around another year, Adolphus won't cut it as the cinderblock, and we get a beast no one is going to run through. Dareus though ? I don't know he can make it through a season without an issue, I doubt it, if he does, he'd better lose some weight and try harder to succeed Kyle.

172: R5P27 QB CHAD KELLY OLE MISS : Well, Kelly has his issues, sure. But it's round 5, and honestly in thinking about it, while not being polished, none of the QB's in this draft are and Kelly is about as fiercely intent on the process as any of them. Giving him to a WR coach who coaches QB's is not going to harm his fragile idea of the position, and not teaching him anything will have less damage than any other QB in this draft that I can think of, though it's not exactly going to sharpen him into Tom Brady.

196: R6P11 WR DAMOREEA STRINGFELLOW OLE MISS : I like this guy. He's thought to be a better game player than he tests, and I think he is. He's not going to blister teams with speed, but he's going to catch the ball, move the chains, relentlessly, imho, and surprise you sometimes because he intends to catch what you throw at him. He might be udfa, I don't want him to be.

    My best draft yet.

    CBS rankings Fanspeak needs.

    1) Hooker- S Ohio ST all three safeties were there
    2) White CB LSU- normally draft QB here but White will challenge to replace Gilmore, CBS and Walter had him as a mid 1st
    3) Mahomes III QB Texas tech- are you freaking kidding me?
5a)Cooley WR Miami- WR A big play WR
    5b)Toth C Kentucy- Depth inside
    6) Senior OT Mississippi State- thought about drafting Kelly here (he went with the next pick) But with Mahomes, Jones and a veteran starting Kelly would be a practice squad guy. RT is a huge need and adding another guy to the mix there is better then mothballing another QB (maybe).

Fanspeak rankings: LOL Not so realistic but I'd jump out of my skin.

    3: S Desmond King, IOWA

10: R1P10 DL JONATHAN ALLEN ALABAMA

    75: R3P11 C ETHAN POCIC LSU

If Allen falls to 10 it should take about 0.00001 seconds to make the pick.
