It’s been a bad week for the Buffalo Bills, bad enough to get SI.com to send Don Banks to Western New York with questions about the rash of adversity.
Along the way, Bills coach Rex Ryan blurted out something that seems a little far-fetched on its face — and could be a borderline violation of the tampering rules.
“Has he missed a little time?” Ryan said regarding the notion that 2014 first-round wideout Sammy Watkins is injury prone. “Yeah. Big deal. He and everyone else. [Odell] Beckham kid came out the same year, and he missed how many games with a hamstring issue? Believe me, I was trying to trade for him [with the Jets] when he had the hamstring. I was reading the [New York] papers, and I was like, ‘Well, hell, we’ll take him.'”
Beckham missed four regular-season games to start his career, but then racked up 1,305 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in only 12 games. Still, Beckham’s lack of availability prompted comments of concern from former Giants coach Tom Coughlin. Those remarks likely caught Ryan’s ear.
By 2014, however, Ryan’s wings had been clipped, with G.M. John Idzik firmly in charge of the roster and Rex coaching whomever Idzik gave him. Moreover, the fact that no word of a potential trade of Beckham was leaked to the ever-swarming New York media suggests that there was no effort to pull off a cross-town swap — especially since news of a desire by the Jets to trade into the top 10 to select Beckham made its way to the media before the draft.
Meanwhile, it’s hard not to wonder whether Ryan’s comments about Beckham are aimed at pointing out that, while Ryan was still with the Jets, Bills G.M. Doug Whaley screwed the pooch by trading up from No. 9 to No. 4 to get Watkins when Whaley and the Bills could have stayed where they were and gotten Beckham, who to date has performed better than Watkins. With both Whaley and Ryan reportedly on an playoffs-or-step-off mandate for 2016, it makes sense to always be looking for any proof of one guy trying to pin the blame for the team’s struggles on the other guy.

These manufactured headlines aren't exclusive to downtime by any stretch to the imagination. There are always legions of idiots to bite, and I find this sensationalist "journalism" very annoying. Create a story were there isn't one. Also, contrive a misleading headline that makes users want to click it as often as possible...the whole thing isn't even honest anymore, generally.

Has Rex Ryan said some stupid things in the past? Yes, even he knows that. He'll probably even do it again. But now it's reached the point where people want to nitpick everything he says every time he opens his mouth...to twist soundbytes out of context in ways that generate mouse-clicks, however innocuous what was actually said. The stereotype has been set, and the so-called journalists ride with it not because it's truthful, but because it's good for their careers or whatever. Then somebody says " oh look, Rex is at it again," and the shoddy article writer wins the scam.

Who needs context when we have a picture in our brain? Who needs to think critically, for that matter?

I think it's reached the point of Mike Rodak not even taking him seriously. When that happens I don't think anyone does anymore. Rodak is no one special, ESPN beat reporter. They aren't nitpicking, they're chuckling. Ryan is to snicker at.

It's in the last paragraph of the article. Rex is apparently throwing Whaley under the bus with this statement somehow.

By saying this (if I am reading this the way the author intends) Ryan is reminding everyone how much better Beckham is and how much Whaley over-reached to take the fragile Watkins. IDK. That's how I read it any way. Ryan heaping blame on Whaley. But IDK.

I think some are trying to read into this too much. The Jets had **** at WR at the time, and I'm pretty sure if they had managed to land Sammy in that draft there would have been no thought of trading for Beckham when he was dinged.

The author (with Mike Florio this is not surprising) directs the reader to read too much into it. Really is an example of media over-stepping their bounds and trying to concoct a story that probably isn't really there. Mike Florio does this every day. He is terrible. If CBS is trying to build a product to compete with ESPN, they shouldn't be doing it on the heels of this lawyer turned reporter hack.

The author's jump in logic is quite astounding.

All Rex was talking about was how some people overreact to injuries. There is no hidden meaning or insinuation there at all.

Now, do you find fault with that? You'd have to try pretty hard, and project things that aren't there. But as we've seen, it's possible to find fault with just about anything if that's what one sets out to do.

So, when Rex was with the Jets, he wanted to trade for a great young player who may have been on the outs with his current team because of injury issues? What's the problem? What coach WOULDN'T want to trade for him if he couldn't get along with the Giants for non-football reasons?

It's a bit strange that Rex is still offering up details of what he and the Jets wanted to do 2-3 years ago but that's not worthy of an article. I'm usually the first one to bash anyone at OBD for cause, so if there was anything here I'd be all over it. But this is just stupid.
