Latest on new stadium thoughts from ownership

    Terry : http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/16...-stadium-plans

    Kim : http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2016...t-finding-mode

The substance of both is that they aren't being pushed and they're aware of market limitations while doing due diligence. This is a good thing imho.

It's also where Brandon comes into play with some common sense in his real field (from the latter) :

“When you look under the Christmas tree everyone wants brand-new toys, that’s easily said,” team president Russ Brandon said. “But when you go through the process and look to see exactly what makes sense for our community, that’s what we have to be very thoughtful of. With a new stadium comes a lot of things — public-private partnership, there’s PSLs (personal seat licenses), there’s cost increases across the board. We’ve been successful in Buffalo with a volume model; lot of seats in the building, lot of suites in the building, and we’ve been able to keep costs down because we’ve been able to manage a 43-year-old building and we’ve been able to do that very well. That equation, economically, changes with a new building.”

    Agreed.

We can afford our seats, at present. They will double across the board. once a new stadium opens. They are being very PC in their comments, while thinking " what's the hurry ? ".

There is quite a bit of pragmatism to what they are saying.

Everyone who follows football knows this team has ranged from terrible to mediocre for the last 15 years. But the fans generally keep showing up. Why? Because we know we can have fun tailgating and because it's affordable, at least relative to other NFL stadiums.

But if we get a new stadium, costs will go up, and if it's downtown, people will be forced into more expensive bars and restaurants because tailgating will be limited to people with the means to afford the limiting parking right next to the stadium (that's what happens here in Balt).

If the team continues to struggle, or even if we have a few successful years then go into another slump, people won't go to an expensive new stadium. The situation becomes unsustainable and Pegula and the team will lose a lot of money.

Are you familiar with the strategic 4 sector model?

High volume implies low quality/cost product to be successful.

Re: Latest on new stadium thoughts from ownership

the bills have to stay at high volume because the lower volume relies on the box revenue. and the bills (and a lot of the other teams under the top 15 in revenues) don't make enough on box sales to offset the loss of season ticket holders. so in SF, go ahead and build a 55k seat stadium with levels of boxes on top of each other. there is plenty of money to make each box 100-500k a year. for the bottom 15, you aren't selling those boxes at those levels. so to put more boxes in at the expense of seating, it doesn't make sense.

what is also awesome is that people look at the top 3-5 company's in any industry and assume that's the winning strategy. you have to look at your lot and how you either plan to get to top 3-5 or know how to work your niche. buffalo is never going to be nyc or SF. and that's fine. I think a new stadium makes sense if its a year round building in downtown and the state supports infrastructure build in conjunction with luring other companies based on improving infrastructure. to build a stadium just to have a shiny new toy with no benefit to the city or the people of the city in the form of jobs or improved infrastructure is a waste of money.

I never understand this argument. You realize you will get fans, with families, that won't go to games at the Ralph but will at the new stadium. You will be trading out some fans. That's the way it works.

not at 2x the cost. the bills get a good percentage of traveling fans as well. they make that trip because its cheaper to travel and get the ticket and hotel than it is to buy the seat equivalent in their home market. you lose that, then its all on bills fans to make up the difference.

I'm more worried about the drunks than I am the stadium. Dont care if you have a better stadium than the cowboys, drunken bills fans will ruin the experience anyways.
