The Sabres have a very poor effort in Columbus
Unlike last Wednesday, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and very little to no chance on all the goals against him.
Columbus, OH (WGR 550) – Yes, the Buffalo Sabres did overcome a 3-1 deficit on Wednesday to tie the Columbus Blue Jackets in the third period, but they hung their goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen out to dry on all four goals Columbus scored before an empty netter and lost 5-3.
It was a bad, disjointed effort that didn’t make Don Granato very happy,
“It was a disjointed game and you could say it’s preseason or whatever, but we need to be better and we know that. That was below the standard that we want and it was simple, we wanted to play a skill game before the foundation of work and we need to come out and play a work game and we fell behind as a result.”
The game doesn’t count and the team is still a week away from the regular season opener against the New York Rangers, so Granato knows what he wants to do,
“Tonight was an easy one to have a meeting tomorrow to look at things and find the resolve. In the beginning we let the players play, but now it’s time to get ready and there was plenty in that game that we can extract and pull as we prepare for opening night.”
Granato said the coaching staff will bring things to their attention and challenge them.
Connor Clifton showed a lot of rust playing in his first preseason game. He certainly wasn’t alone as many others played poorly too. It’s one thing to play poorly, but it’s quite another to glide back on your back check and stand there as the other team scores goals. Many Sabres forwards were guilty of that.
Buffalo did use goals from Owen Power and Zach Benson to at least tie the game. Benson now has three goals and two assists for five points in five games. He was one of the few bright spots in this game.
Buffalo gets one more chance Friday when they close the preseason at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Right now, that extension for Dahlin(deserved, BTW)will take up just over 13% of the Sabres' cap(per The Sabre Report). That said, as the cap rises per team, over the life of the contract that will look like a steal. Just like the other long-term extensions Kevyn Adams has signed in the recent past(i.e. Thompson, Samuelsson, etc.) Now get to locking up Owen Power and those two will be anchoring the D for seasons to come.
BTW, Matt Savoie was placed on IR today. He is skating through his rehab but has not been cleared for contact as yet.
And it LOOKS like Zach Benson has played himself onto the opening night roster. Cue the "doink doink" sound effect.

John Hemingway(facing certain death): I want to see Buffalo win the Super Bowl.
David Coltrane(threatening John): Nobody's going to live that long, pal.

BTW, not Sabres related but I know one of the names I'm about to mentioned has been bandied about when it comes to Buffalo.
Winnipeg just extended the contracts of F Mark Scheifele and GK Connor Hellebuyck; each for 7 years and each for an AAV of $8.5 M .
Surprised that Scheifele agreed to stay there.
Owen Power signs for 7x8.35

We’re in a great position as an organization moving forward! And I think we’re finally at a point where we could possibly add an impact player at the trade deadline that could help with a deep playoff run. We all saw how hot Florida got at the end of the season and sneaked into the playoffs; all the way to the Stanley Cup finals.
Sammy is day to day..good news
