I remember the codeine cough syrup heyday - Robitussin AC, Cheracol-D, Novahistine and the like. I was picking up some part-time $ working at a drugstore when the NYS laws changed. You used to sign the "book" and get the stuff. The day before the law went into effect making them an Rx, we had black folk lining up out the door, and four or five Cold Springs taxi as well as a bus waiting out in the parking lot.

The owner of the pharmacy knew what was what, and stocked up and made a killing. As did the crowd - the stuff sold for 5 or so bucks, and was re-sold at a handsome profit.
