Winning or losing does not make the joke better or worse.
The joke was funny.
Nonetheless everybody is entitled to hate Rex because he is not a good coach.
It just doesnot make sense to find the joke less funny due to this.
Do you think we would win more games if he would not have made the joke?
Oh, yes, he could have spent the 5 min on game planning. Especially since probably these were a few minutes he had to spent with the press anyway...

Having a personality doesn't make Rex a bad guy. It doesn't make him a good coach, either. I think this prank was funny, and his coaching is funny, but in a different sort of way.
